Hello All,

How well does a SAM Missile Battery work against enemy air power in CIV 3 1.29f? Will they actually kill enemy bombers or just damage? Do they protect the city radius or just defend the city?

Also do fighters set to air supremacy defend the city or the radius?

SAM (vanilla 1.29f) defends vs nukes.
Fighters defend a radius, half their operational range.
Airplanes are never damaged, they either make it, or they are shot down.

UPDATE: Scrap that! I was half asleep when I posted this!

Using bombers is there an increase in bombardment sucess if you conduct a recon mission (fighter) before bombarding?

Is there a higher success rate for artillery if you are one tile away vs. two?

Answer to both: No, as far as i know there is no statistical difference. However, seeing what units are being hit is helpful, so recon is a good thing. If you have enough bombers, you can leave a city with no defenders, allowing even a red-lined cav take it.

In reply to TheOverseer714:
In vanilla, bombers have no lethal bombard, you can only red-line defenders.

I had already built SAM Missile Battery in four of my cities very close to the border. When I went to war with the Egyptians they had 15 bombers and after 4 turns of war they have yet to attack my cities with SAMMB... I have been keeping them very busy... Even though these cities were staging areas for the attacks and are the cities that I am landing transports to bring in reinforcements.

Funny side note. When we went to war the Romans had a touching border with Egypt and per MPP declared war also. Egypt took two of their cities and I captured one and egypt abandoned the other leaving 8 tanks and 7 infantry and other units exposed in no mans land. I killed all of the units and founded a new city on the location of the old Roman city which was coincidentally between a rubber and a coal!!

@MAS:

SAM's do not defend against Nukes. I think you're mistaking it for the strategic missle defense, or whatever it is. SAMs have a 50% chance of shooting down enemy planes over the city square (not the entire radius).

And, airplanes do get damaged on occasion. If intercepted by a fighter, if the bomber wins it is almost always damaged. The fighter is often damaged if it wins too. Also, air units get damaged by bombardment (though I can't remember if it's likely that air units get bombarded in vanilla).

The AI cheats, pure and simple. It knows you have SAMs in those cities, and thus is reluctant to bomb them.

And the reason the AI has to cheat is because it's so darned stupid. :p

I have noticed that bombers get damaged too. It is strange though that when you capture an enemy city that the air units and ships are destroyed... I think they should be capturable like artillery units are. There are many instances in RL where a land army has captured a city and taken over naval and air units... But alas CIV is not RL!!:D

Hoo-boy, I hope Aceman doesn't see that remark! :p

You're right psweet. In vanilla (I've been playing vanilla for years) SAM's do NOT block nuke attacks. I'm 100% sure about that. The Strategic Defense Initiative does that except it offers a 75% chance of intercepting a nuke and it only has to be built in one city.

Wait... What if you had SAM's in every city? Will they still bomb some city's?

:mischief: I've got something to say about this.... I AGREE!!!!

There was a link here about that. Psweetman and I had a long talk about why you should capture naval units.

I noticed this question remained unanswered, so... No, it doesn't make a difference.

:D ha-ha I saw this thread... I'm speechless!

I rarely play in the modern age, still, why did I mess this up to such an extend? Must have been getting late when I posted that... :(
