Is there any extra production if we build an airbase?
If there is, what are the terrains where it's productive?

There is a known bug when using airfields!

They act as RAILROAD and FARMLAND whereever you build them. Even if farmland cannot be build on that terrain. So if you build an airfield, you do not need to build a road/rail and irrigation/farmland on that tile. But you can build a mine and an airfield on the same tile. This is especially efficient and hills and mountains. This way you get the food from the farmland as well as the shield from the mine, from the SAME tile.

This is a built in "bug", but it is not allowed for example in the GOTM games. And it also looks stupid when plastering the whole world with airfields.
:D

I've found that the airbase has no effect on forest squares that are already railroaded so I'm not sure what you mean by "Even if farmland cannot be build on that terrain". It doesn't give you any extra food.

I think that he means mountains, which you cannot irrigate but provide food when an airbase is built on them.

Better put, they give that tile the same bonus as a city. This accounts for the exception duke o' york points out.

They also do not get polluted unless by nuke attack. :nuke:

Some call the "airfield on hill" a trick, some call it a bug, but in fact it's not a bug (the programmers of Civ 2 deliberately did it, and chose not to alter it in later revisions).

As such, it is not even really an exploit... though I think players in a given game or contest should either agree to use it or not to use it, just to be consistent. A lot of discussion has taken place from time to time about Airbase benefits, but since the Airbase is only available in the last third of the game, and presumably models modern technology's ability to construct, I'm not even convinced the 2 engineer turns to construct it are out of balance. In real life, airbases often provide food when we construct them (Air Force/Navy). The certainly always always have road infrastructure with them, and RR or port connections in many cases (that's where we get the fuel, BTW.... take a look in the Middle East, for instance, at what we did in the Persian Gulf War).

Not exactly. They do not act as a RR, though they act more comprehensively than farmland. That is, the airfield costs no movements points to enter, if entering from a RR tile or a city tile. This is not at all the same as a RR, since in fact you still must build the RR if you want the RR benefits, including:

1. GOTO routing.
2. Trade bonus.
3. Corruption/waste reduction.

However, the Airfield will also give the RR's 50% shield production increase in that tile.

About Farmland benefits, it will give both irrigation and farmland benefits (the latter with Supermarket). It will allso create one food in Mountains.

Even if farmland cannot be build on that terrain. So if you build an airfield, you do not need to build a road/rail and irrigation/farmland on that tile.
If you want all the actual benefits of Roads & RR's, you still must build them in the Airfield's tile. On teh other hand, the need for irrigation and farmalnd is greatly reduced, unless you want redundancy for attacks and pillaging.

But you can build a mine and an airfield on the same tile.
Quite true. You can also build irrigation, farmland, roads, and RRs in the same tile, but not Fortresses.

Airfields are good, but in reality not a cheat or even an exploit.... however, people should play group games either with them or without them. In general, it is best not to cut them out of the game, though.
