Last night, I almost posted something very derogatory about WC's. Then I had three attempts today.
The first game, I was hemmed in quickly (I play Pangaea maps) by Qin, Roosevelt and MM. I did get one of China's cities (a holy city no less) but had to sue for peace when I realized that I wouldn't be able to sustain the pressure (the rest of Qin's cities were on hills and had culture bonuses). I got Washington in a punitive strike, but could make no more progress. I then turned the game over to an axe rush, but abandoned the game when it bogged down into a suicide campaign whenever I tried to go to war. Since when does 75% odds of winningmean you win one in four? Axemen with CR I should be able to take Swordsmen with Combat I on an open field more than one try in four...
Second try, I had the idea to send a couple WC's towards MM. I did get his second city, but lost all my offence in the attack on the capital. MM then hemmed in the isolated city. The second war again bogged down (Skirmishers hold their own against WC rather well). I conceded when Roosevelt (I'm beginning to dislike him) jumped me and took the holy City (with Shrine, SH, Oracle and Heroic Epic).
Third one I think I finally got this right. I built peacefully until I had 8 WC's on the border with HC and had three cities punping out WCs. I had no Bronze, and wasn't getting Iron Working any time soon. (Chronically low science has plagued my attempts as Hatty). I managed to take all four cities (I had hemmed the Inca in without realizing it). I saved off with total control of about a third of the continent (Small Pangea) at about 280 AD with one down and three more to go..
