Alexander The Great's Conquests Scenario help

I just finished my attempt to become "Alexander the Great."
Completing the tech tree does nothing except give you several useful abilities. The Future Tech requirements for the upgraded titles is a bit misleading.

It took a total of 197 experience points earned by the unit equiped with the Alexander general which you start the scenario with to achieve the final title.:crazyeye:

White,

Do you remember how many experieince points you needed to reach the higher levels? I would like to add that to my strategy notes article. I hadn't seen anyone make it to 'the Great'.

Did you use your new warlords to promote Alexander to help get that many experience points?

Any help here is appreciated!

I'll have to go back and check my saves to see where the other titles start, but that won't be until after the weekend is over. Be patient and I'll see what I can dig up.

I did abuse my great generals a bit to get that far. I merged the first to only one unit to give the maximum experience and if I remember correctly, got the first title upgrade immediately.

All of the remaining great generals I attached to one unit with Alex in the same spot and no others to insure that Alex got half of the experiance. The rest of the time I make sure that Alex was part of nearly every attack. Unfortunately, I did alot of saving and reloading to insure that Alex stayed alive. :mischief: It felt like cheating, but I needed to know where the line was and how long it took to reach it.

I took my time and it still took me 50 extra turns milking the last city for units before I got that last title. On the upside, once he got the blitz promotion, things went much quicker.

White,

Let's not call it 'cheating'. Let's call it 'research into the scenario'. :-)

Take your time!

Ok, I didn't have all the info in my saves, so I spent some time in the world builder trying to figure out when everything happens. Here are the titles and the levels required to make the switch. Remember that all the experience values are those required by the unit joined by Alexander (the great general you start with).

Alexander the Victorious: Level 6 (26 xp)
Alexander the Brave: Level 9 (65 xp)
Alexander the Amazing: Level 13 (145 xp)
Alexander the Great: Level 15 (197 xp)

Now remember that a Great General provides a total of 25 xp to the units on the square when he is joined. You start the scenario with 2 companion cavalry which already have 2 xp. By bringing one of those to your general, you can join the general and get an instant boost to 27 xp. That is just a little more than you need for the first title upgrade.

The next GG that you obtain, you should bring the General to Alex and one other unit. (You can't join another GG to Alex's unit.) When the GG joins your second unit, the experience will be split between the two. One unit will get 12 and the other 13 xp. Which one gets the extra seems to be random.

With my game, I earned a total of 6 Generals. I assume that Alex was one of them. That means that my unit earned about 86 to 91 free xp from the joining of Great Generals. This means that I needed to earn around 108 to 113 xp from battles. (Remember that my cavalry started with 2 xp from the start.)

That is enough for now, I'll throw in my tips and tactics for this mod in a few hours. I'm hungry right now. ;)

I've read your article Breunor, and you've definitely put some thought into it.
As long as you give me credit for my work, you can add this to your article. :goodjob:

Anyway, my tips and tactics for this mod:

First and foremost: Slavery. Alexander starts with this civic active. Whip away in those production poor cities when you need to. Many of your cities eventually become production powerhouses. You won't need the whip in these cities unless you want to get rid of some unhappy citizens.

My tech order is as follows: Barbarian Assimilation, Battlefield Siege, Military Sergeants, and then Barbarian Assimilation 2 & 3. That way I can get the city raider promotions and whatever medic units that I need to bolster my troops. After that I'll head to Horse Breeding for the stables. I then beeline to Army Servants and Cultural Assimilation for the very nice bonuses they provide. I like my troops maneuverable. :D

I have little use for the drill promotions and my archers will likely not see much action, but I'll pick them up for my catapults should they get some promotions beyond CR3.

My troops consist of about 30+% PHALANX. Darius loves his immortals and will throw lots of them your way. Elephants also make an appearance, but with enough Phalanx, they won't trouble you much. I use the Hypaspists for anti-melee and as the bulk of my city raider squad. They will of course be backed up by a large number of catapults. Finally, I round out my troops with a few Companion Cavalry. They are strong enough to take out a few stay Immortals should they get past your lines. I make just enough Archers to defend my cities. I for the most part, ignore all the other available troops.

Specialize your cities. If you plan on training Phalanx in a city, don't worry about building the stables. Build a barracks and a Barbarian Barracks if you want them to have the free city raider promotion it gives. If you want a city producing mounted units, you can build the stables and ignore the other buildings other than the barracks.

As far as expansion goes, things are fairly linear. I will make a quick side trip through Egypt to capture the pyramids as soon as I can. After cleaning up Egypt and switching to Police State, I'll finish Darius. Just don't ignore him. If you have enough troops, consider continuing your expansion through the Persian Empire while beating on the Egyptians. After you take Babylon from him, He'll slowly stop being a problem.

Watch out when the cities you conquer come out of rebellion. Unless there was something wrong in my game, you might not notice when they do and they won't build ANYTHING until you tell them to.

The two Indian Empires only have a few cities. Take them out one at a time if you are feeling cautious. They are defended by quite a few elephants, but your Phalanx should be able to defend your troops more than well enough.

Good luck with your conquest. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
