Alien Crossfire crashes to desktop

Snooping around in the registry shows

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\06D4E20139A5C3A41850EF9340726CD0

as the location for the compatibility update installation information. Does your PC still have that key? Also, can you now start a game of SMAX via non-Quick Start?

1. Yes, the key still exists.

2. After following the rest of the given installation procedure you linked me, ignoring the compatibility patch error, I do find that I can start a SMAX game normally. I guess I'll be seeing if not having the patch installed results in any issues, though I do recall reading somewhere that it only affects SMAC.

Thanks for the help. I'll post again if I come across another problem or you want me to do any more digging.

If you only want to play SMAX, then the compatibility update isn't critical. If you still want to install the update, you could delete the above-mentioned key (or better, export it to a file in case something goes wrong) and try again. My guess is that the key should have been deleted when you uninstalled the update and its presence is preventing the reinstallation.

I have the exact same problem with a fresh copy of SMAC+ SMACX. It simply crashes to desktop after you select a version to load from the screen. It doesnt ever load the game. After installing the patch from Firaxis, the regular SMAC will load and then immediately crash. Everything is running in compadibility mode including for all users, etc.

It simply doesnt work. No ideas

I have this issue too. Been playing SMAC on XP SP3 for a few weeks fine, decided to expand with Alien Crossfire and then neither game loaded; I'd load SMAX, get the Firaxis video and the selector screen, pick what I want, and then the picture comes up on the desktop. It crashes back to desktop without ever loading up. Reinstalling the 2.0 patch allowed SMAC to run as before but SMAX is still failing to load.

Any ideas?

P.S; I hear something about modifying an .ini file manually. What is this and what does it do please? Could it help?

Hi Spychotic!

First, I suggest uninstalling everything. Then reinstall using the instructions here. Ignore the stuff about Hamachi; that's for multiplayer.

The ini file is Alpha Centauri.ini, located in your main SMAC folder. You might need to modify it if you're getting the error message CPU not supported or if you would like the game to run at a different screen resolution. I'd be glad to elaborate, but first go ahead with a reinstallation and let us know what happens.

Finally got round to doing it, and it all works now. Thanks for the assistance! Having this somewhere prominent on the Forums wouldn't go amiss I think.

This is how I finally got SMACX to run on my Windows-7 machine:

Double click on the Alpha Centauri.ini File (The file looks like a read me text file with a little gold symbol on it).

Once the file is open in Notepad, change:

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0

to

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
