I got the SMAC/Alien Crossfire edition from Sold Out for my birthday, but whenever I try to install Xfire it messes up SMAC. (So now I've just got SMAC installed, which works OK.) Any suggestion on how to get Xfire to work? (I'm using Vista if that's relevant.)

In what way is SMAC "messed up"? Do you get any specific error messages? Have you already uninstalled both games and reinstalled (from the Sold Out disks)? If no, try that. What else, if anything, have you already tried?

SMAC works fine, it's Xfire that simply doesn't load. (There doesn't appear a start screen or anything, just nothing happens.) Since Xfire overwrites SMAC files, I've unnstalled both, renstalled both - same result. So I now only installed SMAC, since that works at least. (Although the startup screen is a bit weird...) As I've several savegames now, I don't really want to reinstall again to check for error messages, if any.

Don't know if this is related, but using the start icons (either the SMAC or Xfire in the SMAC folder) does give an error message, which doesn't appear when I load from the disk or use the Windows startup button). Also, no desktop start icon appears after installing; don't know if that's supposed to be like that either.:crazyeye:

Well, if you want to install SMAX again, try patching it up to version 2.0, which can be found here. If that doesn't help, try starting it in Windows 2000 compatibility mode. If that doesn't help, try other compatibility options. If none of that helps, please post again, along with the exact text of any error messages.

BTW, many who have problems with SMAX can still run SMAC with no problem. Just run terran.exe.

Thanks, will try.

EDIT: Installed the patch, but still get tis message: "Your cpu is not supported..." So how do I start it in Windows 2000 mode?

Thanks! (That sounds easy enough.)

EDIT: I tried the suggestions from the FAQ and Xfire now works - thx again. ;)
