just stop it with this civ killer bullfeathers, it's a different kind of game with different aims, it must be worked on? sure, but the fundations are good....
It never was supposed to be a Civ killer. People wanted it to be as Firaxis needs the competition. Also content creators and the big gaming media hyped it up that way to generate clicks.
Oxide Games avoided comparing their game with Civ for good reason. It's a different animal. It has elements of Civ but also a lot of other interesting things going for it. It's sort of a chimera CivAnnoVictoriAra with some Old World and other games thrown in. It's pretty fun.
For a team that is much smaller than Civ, they've had a good launch.
As I have said, the most likely "Civ killer" is Civ itself...or maybe 2K. I know the idea is floated everytime a new Civ-like game apoears, and some may have mentioned it with regards to Ara, but it is extremely unlikely that any new 4X is going to dethrone Civ with its first entry.
That said, what we can hope for is real competition, which is something I believe Civ needs. As far as I am concerned, Ara is currently the best competition for Civ. While it is of course its own thing, it does tackle many of the same concepts, in a different way.
With regards to "all cheers suddenly stopped", my enthusiasm for the game is as before. I am not claiming it is perfect, there are issues, but they are bring worked on.
So far I like it very much. I never understood this fanboy thing anyway. I have been playing Civ and Civ like games for 32 years and the more there are the better. I agree, though, that Civ7 is at least threatening to become the Civ killer with its "every civ has to fail at least twice per game and be replaced" approach.

Me too. Bought the first civ in 92 or 93 and have played every installment since. I can still enjoy Ara
I don't like that concept much either, but will keep an open mind on Civ7.
