I've tried this strat , & I've found it works . Make an alliance with another civ , then send 5-6 settlers/engineers to his territory . Mine his irrigation into forest , transform his grassland ( even better are special resources , which eventually run out ) , irrigate his hills , & in general wreak havoc with his terrain . So , in effect , you can destroy your ally without a war .

Nice Idea but it will only limit their growth/productivity and not destroy them completely.

I guess another alternative is to put your settlers into their area and build cities on their resources. Rushbuild a few walls, move your army in and then break off the treaty. Then you can start eating away at their resources.Of course the ai may just decide to 'buy' these cities for themselves

Allies are easy to destroy, since you should be able to control the timing of attack. Don't mess up the terrain... that city is really YOURS, it's just that you're letting the ally use it for awhile .

Uggh, that was one cheap strategy...

And despite that I can easily admit it might work, I would never do it myself, for several reasons. First of all, like the others said, that land is really yours, and you should by all means be able to take it without messing it up. Second of all I really could never have that on my conscience, so bluntly abusing the poor AI's stupidity like that. Not me, no. I'm too honest for that. :king:

A supplement to that strat is to build cities where their city square is in the city radius of at least one of their cities ( pref with a wonder ) then build a city on a neutral and ensure that that square stays neutral . When you have at least all of their winder cities within your city radii , cancel the alliance . Technically , all defenders within the cities whose squares overlap with yours should be emptied of all defenders . From the neutral city , move in your forces & capture the defenceless cities . :D

P.S. I haven't tried , so can't say if it'll work or not .

I will say this for you... you've got a creative imagination. If I understand your "strategy" right, I'm sorry to disappoint you... it will not work because units are only removed to the nearest friendly city. A city is a safe haven... units are never evacuated from there by treaty, even if the enemy city's square is in your city radius.

Also, in a Democracy (or Republic), you may not be able to move into an empty city anyway. In other gov't, you can stab the AI in the back all you want, though.

I prefer to Build roads in my territories or road going to their territory and spend money on howitzer tanks and planes to destroy them in one turn or two...

But I got to admit i'll try your fabulous strategy in my next game...
