I think we should have the americans as our allies because they are close, which means if we are attacked they can quickly send aid if we agree a mutual protection act.

No we don't need allies but they would be very usefull, if we got dragged into a very long weary war we would be neglecting our city improvements and war weariness would ensue, with allies we would do slightly less work so we would save money and we would have more time to build city improvements and wonders and having an ally would shorten the war and safeguards us, better safe than sorry

Allies are nice but the main problem is that you usually make allies then want to stab them in the back the next turn(ok, maybe it's just me )

It seems that if you do want to make an ally, it better be someone you won't need to be killing for a LONG time.
