Welcome to the loneliest experience beyond Earth. We all know that the AI currently posses little to no threat even on Apollo when you can fill the map with your colonists. But what if your capital is all you get? Can you still fulfill your destiny before your rivals?

The rules are simple: You cannot found another outpost. If you gain control of an outpost or a city, you must raze it ASAP. If impossible (capitals), you must sell it to an AI of your choice. All map settings other than those mentioned below are random, no DLC or mods required. Usage of exploitative behavior not prohibited as we will need all the advantage we can get.

In addition, Contact victory is disabled. This is due to how extremely degenerate it can be with Progenitor Ruins. Domination victory is unfortunately impossible due to there being no OCC setting like in CivV.

Alone among the stars #1 - Preparation is everything
For our first lonely venture among the stars, I have stacked the odds in our favour to enable as many people as possible to participate. This means:
  • Hutama
  • Artists
  • Continental Surveyor
  • Machinery
  • Atlantean Map
  • Legendary Start
Our mission is simple: To survive in the face of adversity, establish our foothold on this new planet and achieve our destiny by the way of Supremacy, Harmony, Purity or simply wiping everyone else out and keeping the new land to ourselves. If you feel competitive, post your victory screenshot and compete for a fastest time for your Affinity.

In any case, be sure to share your experience, discuss your strategies and collaborate to overcome this challenge. We will see how it goes - there is always room to make things harder if these settings turn out to be too easy as well.

Do YOU have what it takes?

Finished with Transcendence Turn 247.

Spoiler :
After loading the map once and landing I reloaded because screw that choosing the wrong coast for no TR (inner sea).

Game was easy. Was never in any danger.

Mostly a spam of end turns, bribed brasilia a lot during the game and he kept being my friend. I reached Affinity 13 on turn 190 approximately, then it was just a slow build of the Mind Flower and a wait of 27 turns after that.

Went Knowledge + Might obviously. Built the Ecto pod and some other irrelevant wonder. Focused on spies and science all game. Got a progenitor ruin (or 2 ???? can't remember).

Thanks metagross for this challenge. I completed a Purity "Promised Land" victory on turn 240.

Spoiler :

Here's a close up of Freeland:

I placed three of the Earthling Settlements on inhospitable islands in the frozen north, LOL:

In the screenshot immediately above you can see that there is a Brasilian city next to Freeland called Jimboomba. This is a city that I founded. I know, this is a One City Challenge, what was I doing?! Let me explain. During the game I received the "Solid State Citizen" quest which offers a reward of 12 Purity affinity points (or 12 Supremacy affinity points if you prefer). One of the steps in the quest is to build an outpost. I purchased a colonist and built an outpost within two tiles of an alien nest. My thinking was that I could satisfy the quest requirement by building the outpost but I wouldn't be in breach of OCC rules because before the outpost would have time to grow into a city I assumed that the aliens would destroy it. To my surprise (and annoyance) the aliens did not once attack the outpost, even though there were no military units defending it! The outpost eventually turned into a city. I gave the aliens another few turns to attack and when they didn't I sold Jimboomba to Brasilia for 270 energy.

Below is a screenshot of the technologies that I selected during the game. I think that for an OCC challenge the three most important technologies to beeline to are Communications, Orbital Networks and Field Theory (lower right corner of the web) because they all give large boosts to science.
  • Lasercom Satellite gives 15% science
  • Mantle gives +3 science and 10% science
  • Feedsite Hub gives +1 science for each international trade route (plus it offers a free covert agent from its associated quest)
  • Command Center offers a free covert agent from its associated quest
  • The Quantum Computer wonder provides a free technology as well as +5 science
(Side note: for those of you who are unaware, there is an interactive version of the tech web available on the Apolyton website.)

I wanted Freeland to have as large a population as possible in order to work as many production tiles as possible, so I built the Gene Vault and Ectogenesis Pod and I beelined to Nanotechnology (far left of the tech web) for the Nanopasture and to Biospheres (lower right of the tech web). I also made sure to get Vertical Farming and Industrial Ecology (both in the top left quadrant) which synergize with the Ectogenesis Pod.

It took me about 25 turns to build the Exodus Gate. Near the end of construction I had all seven of my covert agents back at Headquarters helping with the build (each agent boosts the production of wonders by 1% when you switch the Spy Agency's project to "Research and Development").

This was my second attempt at the map. In my first game I finished building the Exodus Gate a couple of turns before one of the AI factions won the game (so I was about 20 turns too slow). In that first try, for my Virtues, I went down the left-hand side of the Prosperity tree. In my second game I followed Acken's suggestion to use the Knowledge tree and then the Might tree. This is a much better path for an OCC challenge because when you only have one city you really need all the help you can get with science production.

The final screenshot below is of my military units at the end of the game. For most of the duration of the game I had literally zero military, LOL. Fortunately, no other faction declared war on me, although some leaders who went Supremacy or Harmony did become extremely hostile towards the very end. My approach to diplomacy was to (i) sign Cooperation Agreements with all the factions who offered them to me; (ii) abstain from declaring war on other factions; and (iii) send trade vessels to each of the other factions. I kept Brasilia friendly by making sure that I always sent at least one trading vessel to one of its cities, even if doing so meant giving up a more profitable trading destination. It also helped that Brasilia went Purity like I did, in both games that I played.

T218 Emancipation - Seems like we managed all three available Victory conditions between the three of us =)

Spoiler :
Will post more details later...

It seems the map is extremely easy due to (1) the capital being in the middle of three chokepoints making it easily defendable, (2) all coastal trade routes up quickly (intended via map settings) and (3) a large number of progenitor ruins. I must have gotten at least 3 Free Affinity levels from ruins.

It took like 40 turns to build the gate though, ugh.

Uh, couldn't you just sell capitals to various other Civs so that no one but the player has their original capital? You'd end the game in possession of 2 cities but I don't feel it would be against the spirit of the challenge.

Edit: As an aside the location of those earthling settlements amuses me. "Welcome Earthling comrades! Welcome to the glorious promised land! Now get on this boat; we'll be shipping you off to the north pole pending no krakens show up. What's a kraken? Never you mind Earthling, on to the boat!"

I thought you had to control all Capitals to win Domination, not that you have to be the last Civ to control their own Capital. If its the former than by all means go for it.

Man, I got destroyed by Brazil on turn 120. Any tips on priorities?
Spoiler :
Send them a trade route early and don't piss them off :D I got DoWed by Brazil and ARC together around T160 but by that time I already had one Angel built so I just went on a conquering spree :D Funnily enough, Brazil never wanted to give me peace, even after I took half their cities and gave them to Vadim.

Nope, it's back to just being the last Civ in control of their original capital. Also, do all the AIs settle easily accessible coastal locations for their capitals? Given how terribly balanced naval warfare is I could picture someone just taking all 7 capitals out in a single turn without too much issue on an Atlantean map. :D

Tried this twice:

- First time Brazilia settled literally every tile on the map in my immediate surroundings, I honestly had nowhere to go.

- Second time, African Union had the Mind Flower up in turn 207, and I wasn't even close. Oh and Brazilia backstabbed me for good measure. I guess I was done for.

I DID manage however to win a Contact OCC game with Hutama some time ago. Didn't get any Progenitor

So Domination victory is possible - great to hear, it would make for a pretty interesting challenge.

It worries me how differently the game plays out for each of us. No AI was even close to winning in my game, yet stormtrooper412's Africa had a Mind Flower t207.

Another observation:
With 5 external trade routes, building the Science buildings actually decreases your Science output if you can only establish routes with other Capitals - that seems really messed up. To maximize Science, don't build Science buildings :D

From my (limited) experience, these early victories can be avoided though: Passive AIs will win quite fast if no other Civ gives them problems, that's something to watch out for. Paying a neighbor to declare war in the midgame should slow them down quite drastically, because they will change to a more military-heavy production-strategy. But still, winning on turn ~240 or something is a gamble.

I don't think I've seen an AI get a winning wonder up so quickly since Elodie got the Transcendence win in turn 169. But that was on Apollo Quick, scale it up however and I believe it would still come out as sub 200.

It's true however that in two takes, the outcome was MAJORLY different. In the second take, Brazilia didn't even spam cities that much, but in the first take, I used the OCC loophole ( :P ) by settling a city to get the affinity quest done, but it was in the middle of the desert and it had ZERO food tiles around it, I sold it for cash and AI puppeted it, it stood there with 1 pop for over 30 turns taking up space for a "normal" city which would grow and contribute.

As for trade routes, I think it's calculated based on the difference in tradeable resource between origin and destination cities so I guess if your city has more ept than the destination city, then the trade route would only yield beakers, and vice versa, which I've seen plenty times and it checks out
