Always Learning New Things

I have been here on the forum since 2006, and working on editing Civ3 with either the very flaky Editor that came with my original Basic Civ3 for the Mac disc, or with the regular editor after venturing onto the "dark side" and buying a surplus Windows desktop from my son's high school so I could edit Civ3 fully. I now have Quintillus's fine editor for the Mac and Steph's editor for Windows, both of which I have used and greatly appreciate the efforts put into them by Steph and Quintillus.

Having said that, I was working with the Play the World editor a couple of days ago and noticed this scenario that came with the game called Industrial Start. I took a quick look at it in Play the World, and lo and behold, your start was with the Industrial Period. I then went over the scenario with the Play the World editor, and figured out how to do that, using the Player Characteristics button. I then thought to myself: "Dale, you need to try this out with TETurkhan's Test of Time scenario for PTW, and Rick's Battleground for Conquests."

I created a new map for Test of Time, after all, this was a test for me, and also one for my Standard Naval Mod in Conquests, both suitably modified and saved.

IT WORKED!!!!!

However, one thing that I had not thought about was that, since I have no Wonder set to go obsolete, all of the Ancient Wonders were available to building. Also, since all of the units were more powerful, I needed to upgrade my Barbarians. This has turned into a work in progress, but it also shows that after more than a decade of playing Civ3, I am still learning new things about the game.

Now if I could just work up my courage to replace the Standard Resource PCX with Pounder's Resources. Then I would have more images for my added bonus resources.

Nice!

Better to learn new things than to forget old things.

Okay, Pounder, how do I put your resource pack into my game? That is an "old thing" that is still a "new thing" to me.

Next question is how do I set up my Mammoth Resource to show up in either the Luxury or Strategic City Screens? Right now, for the Luxury Menu, it has a spot, but with a blank for the image. I want to have it as the mandatory resource for Berserkers. Raw mammoth meat is needed for the Berserker's courage and immunity from wounds. It is has aged for 8,000 years, all the better, but fresh is acceptable.

The file that is used for luxuries on the City screen is luxuryicons_small.pcx, this file will have to be modified.

To help you make the luxuryicons_small file I will need to know a few things:

1) Need a list of all your resources in the order that they are entered in the editor.

2) Need to identify each resource as a bonus, luxury or strategic.

3) Will need a copy of your current resources.pcx file and your luxuryicons_small.pcx file:
a) so that a small icon can be made for each luxury resource, those small icons will go into the luxuryicons_small file.
b) so that I can copy resources that are not in my resources file into the new resources file, so that you have both mine and your resources.

Once we have the resources.pcx and luxuryicons_small.pcx files made, then we rename and save the current files (eg. originalresources.pxc originalluxuryicons.pcx) and finally copy the new files into the game.

Greetings, Pounder, and thanks so much for the reply. Presently, for Conquests, I just have the standard game resources file and luxury icon file. I have not modified them in any way. What I will need to do is compile a list of all of my resources changes, and put them into proper order, strategic, then luxury, then bonus, and make sure I stay within the 32 Resource limit for strategic and luxury resources. Most of my added resources are bonus ones. As an initial heads up, my main added strategic resources would be copper and steel, for the Bronze Age and Steel Advance, while the main added luxuries would be the Mammoth resource and Textiles. I would need to think about added a Monument Stone strategic resource as an option that might not be in every mod.

I will work up a standardized list and post it here. Do I need Civilopedia entrees for all of the new goodies, or is that optional.?

I will just help you with the resources.pcx and the luxuryicons_small.pcx. Your on your own for the civilopedia, I'm sure you will get answers as your questions crop up with the civilopedia.

I will just need to know the resources in the order they appear in the editor starting at zero, and just put the resource type beside each resource (bonus, lux, strat). This is important for making the luxuryicon_small.pcx.

Basically, this fills in what I would like to have. Copper would become available with the Bronze Age, and Steel with the Steel Advance. Steel will be needed for the more advanced ships. Ironclads and Transport will use Iron. Monument Stone could be needed for Wonders, depending on the scenario, while Ship Timber will be needed for the more advanced ships, not the Curragh, Galley, Dromon, or Caravel. That will likely change for Mediterranean scenarios, as the Egyptians also had a major problem getting timber suitable for ships, as did the Arabs.

Mammoth is for creating Berserkers, and maybe letting the Viking have Mammoth Cavalry (using the War Elephant to start with). It should be noted that I like the idea of Mammoths in the game.

For the bonus resources, Hot Springs for at least Iceland on Real World Maps, and anywhere near a Volcano in the Tundra, with the Hot Springs based on the Test of Time Oasis for resource yields.
The Right and Sperm Whales for adding bonus resources in the Coast, Sea, and Ocean tiles, while the Pelagic Fish boost the yield of Sea and Ocean tiles. Plains Game for the plains, thinking of Buffalo here, again boosting yield. Fish Ponds for the Flood Plain areas, as I have discovered that at least on my computers, the map generator is quite stingy when it comes to Wheat in Flood Plains, but goes crazy with Fish Ponds, making the Flood Plain a virtual aquarium. Sheep and Potatoes for the Hills and especially the Mountains, giving food that otherwise is not there. Fruit boosts the food from Forest, similar to Tropical Fruit for Jungle. Lastly, Iron-25 is something I use to boost the production of cities that historically were highly productive, but the resource production from the map does not match that. Byzantium/Constantinople is an example of that.

I have discovered that the map generator will not put resources in Ocean tiles, so those have to be placed manually on a scenario map. I have already noted just the opposite for Fish Ponds. It also produces quite a few Hot Springs in the Tundra.

Is this the order that they appear in the editor?

Is this the order that they appear in the editor?

That will be the order that they will appear in the editor. And again, thanks so much for your assistance.

The Buffalo comment belongs with Plains Game, not the Fish Ponds, although there is a Buffalo Fish that resembles Carp.

I'll post the files on my resource file thread when I'm done.

I got started, finished the luxurysmall_icon file file and got some of the resources file done.

Intend on adding to the resources file: mammoth, copper, potatoes and bison.

I think that my resource file covers the rest. Let me know if it doesn't.

I'll include the original firaxis resource icons in the resources file, so you will still have them to choose from.

I am pretty sure in looking at your resource file that it covers the rest. And again, thank you so much for this. Now to get them added, and start using them.

Am I correct that with the Resource File and Luxury Files that I simply replace the Firaxis files with the new ones? Or is there more to the Luxury file replacement?

Greetings, Pounder, I successfully put them into the correct folders, and they are working beautifully. I have definitely learned a new thing with your assistance. Now, to have some fun adding more bonus resources. Thank you so much.

Edit Note: I have been busing adding a bunch of new bonus resources to one of my mods to see how they work. All looks well for now, and it is nice to have 3 different Whale images for my 3 different types of whale. The same goes for my various Fish. Once I get all of the strategic resources in proper order in the editor, I will have to post a mod so you can see how they look in use. Thanks again so much.
