I have played Civ2 a lot, but I have just gotten this game. I have a city size 6 with a vetern pikeman in it (defence 3), and I was attacked by an regular enemy horseman (attack 2). The horseman easly won the battle! Is there some element of the combat the I am missing here? From what I got from the manual:

3+2 = 5
my pikeman 3/5 = 60% chance of winning
his horseman 2/5 = 40% chance of winning

So why didn't I do any damage to him? Is luck really that big of an element?

Also, how much of a bonus do my units get for being in a city size 6?

You could check out thecivulator

Assuming both units were regular, and your defending unit wasnt fortified, he had a 30% of winning.

As for winning without you damaging him, I think thats more like 5% chance.

So why didn't I do any damage to him? Is luck really that big of an element?

I dunno, look at the %s and you tell me. Seems fine to me, you shouldn't assume 1 unit can defend a city, esp. if its one thats defense isnt much higher than your enemies attack.
