American spawn?

Does anyone know what year the Americans will spawn? Is it a fixed year or a variable range?

I'm playing as a Brit with the Eastern seaboard under control from Boston down to Houston (and then on down to Caracas but that's another story!). There's a French city up in Port Royal and another city in what looks like Newfoundland but that's it.

What happens when the Americans come? I haven't founded a Washington or a New York, but my three nearest cities are Boston, Baltimore and Detroit. The cultural borders are fully red from the great lakes to the Atlantic.

Will the Americans get one or more of my cities for free when they spawn? Or do they turn up with settlers (who will have nowhere to go)? Do they steal some of my units? Or arrive with a fresh army? How strong/aggressive will they be?

Thanks!

From my experience (only played the Septic Tanks twice since BtS) you will loose Boston and there is a fairly high chance they will eventually go to war with you to nab the others back within about 20 turns of 1730.

You will definitely lose Baltimore, and quite possibly Boston. And as mentioned, they start fairly strong (of course strong all relative to your current tech position), but you could rush them if you built up enough of an army.

If Detroit is in line with the peaks it will be okay, if it is one tile east I think it will fall within the flip zone.

Ok, I got caned!!

American spawn zone included Boston, Baltimore, Detroit and Savannah!!

Btw it looks like you know when he's coming because Civ shows the countdown sun with the number of turns before America arrives in brackets in the top right. Between 1730 and 1733AD.

I tried the "NO" don't give the scum my cities option, and he placed two BIG stacks of units, one on the cows south of Baltimore, and one on the hill/mine two places south of Detroit. He comes level in tech with you so if you've got Redcoats he's got Riflemen, about six in each stack, plus some musketmen, pikemen, cannons and around six settlers.

I'd prepared a nice greeting so I could eliminate his ground forces completely on the first turn, at the cost of lots of cannons and redcoats, but on his next turn most of the redcoats that I'd used to attack him had joined him, so I was stuffed, with a huge enemy army outside and lousy defences.

I thought he'd be eliminated if I killed all of his ground forces, but he still had a Frigate, two galleons and two work boats (that I could see), between Baltimore and Savannah and I didn't have anything close enough to deal with them.

Now we're at peace and I'm getting infantry ready to push him into the sea properly next time!! But I've got stability issues (2 stars Civic and Expansion) from other parts of the Limey Empire so I guess he's safe for now...

Oops. Forget the comment about the "countdown sun"! Just realised I must have had a Golden Age that coincidentally ended when America arrived. Explains how I made all those redcoats so fast... DOH!! He comes 1730/1733AD. Good luck!!

Give the Spainish Mexico, that'll sort out your stability ;)

Give the Spanish Mexico? You've got to be kidding! Tuitan is my highest producing City (higher than London, and London has the Ironworks!). Also Oaxaca is my Panama Canal.

I've just built the Pentagon and Wembley in Tuitan too... I guess it's smarter to build Wonders only in my European Cities?

I've swallowed the painful switch to Democracy, Universal Suffrage, Free Speech, etc., losing two Egyptian cities when they seceded to recreate Egypt (but was given back Luxor at the next International Congress), liberated cities in Arabia back to my vassal Turkey, and liberated Indian cities back to my vassal, the Khmer. It's back to Stable for now, and I'm hoping that the "happy" government civics will improve this over time.

Will Mexico declare independence anyway sometime in the 1800s??

How long do vassals agreed in peacetime stick around in RFC? They seem to be much more patient than vassals in regular Warlords used to be?

Some civs never come back. I mean, they all have a chance to but it's a shot in the dark whether the Aztecs actually will.

As for vassals, I just had a great game where my loyal voluntary vassals Mali and India remained willingly under my control from 1709 until I hit Domination in 1956. Portugal joined in 100 years later and stayed til the end.

So yeah, if you are good to your vassals, they stick around. I gave them lots of goodies (cruddy cities I couldn't afford, resources, free techs now and then). And could've curbstomped them had they acted up!

Also, as of a few versions ago and presumably still (?), civs will not reappear if you are Solid or better. America will always still appear regardless, but the Aztecs shouldn't be able to come back if you can get to Solid or higher.

Good luck reclaiming the colonies!
