Hello!

I will have to make a presentation for my English course at the University of Bayreuth.

The topic is Dan Brown, this author is perhaps even more popular in Germany than in the US.

I wanted to point out why, I guess "Angels & Demons" was more succesful in Europe because it actually plays there and that many americans only have a vague impression of the locations, while many europeans already visited Rome.

Someone showed some time ago here an "american map" of the world, showing Europe directly besides Iraq and having large white areas with the text "here be dragons" ... :)

I think this would be a funny thing to show, I do not want to offend the Americans of course.

Does anyone have a link to a similar "map" perhaps?

Sorry for the way off-topic posting.

Don't worry about insulting americans. I know I'm not offended. It's cool.

Yeah i've seen that second 'map' before. I must say they're extremely stupid and a bit insulting, but i guess America-bashing is a big fad these days. I must admit i can at least get a minor laugh out of them though.

That second map needs to be updated, though....there's that weird "Friends" label on Europe. ;)

The Hollywood arrow isn't even pointing to the right place.

And Canada

Yeah, i missed that, they screwed up the Hollywood arrow too. It look smor elike it's pointing at Redwoood City or something. :p

Oh well, i guess we can allow they America haters they're cheap shots and snide comments, they better just hope we're still willing to defend them ;)

Huh? What about us? We're not your friends, we just like playing Hockey with you. It makes us feel better :P

Anyway, as far as the Hollywood arrow goes, it's pointing to California, which is the general area of Hollywood, and since whoever made that map isn't from California, they probably don't care anyway. Hell, if you asked me where Calgary was, I'd just point to somewhere in the middle of Alberta, but my arrow would probably be off by a bit too

Well, you have a point about that arrow. And when i mentioned Canada i was thinking about the American army deserters that've been a hot topic on the news for the last few days. Come on, send those punks back!

Since this whole thing is already off topic as hell already, who do you favor for the Stanley Cup this year Bilko?

This year? It's always been Montreal, never any question. Too bad they're doing so poorly against Tampa, though. Looks like they're doing the same thing they did 2 years ago: Working their asses off to beat Boston in round 1, then slacking off in round 2 and getting their asses kicked when they should be able to beat them.

America is located between two oceans, a wide forest in the North and a desert in the South. As a result, the country is a lot more isolated than are European countries where something happening in Spain has always an effect on Germany. Moreover, Europe itself is not isolated : There are Russia at the East, Middle East in the South East and North Africa in the south. As a result, Europeans feel more concerned about what's happening in Morocco or Turkey than Americans would ever be.

If Americans don't care of the rest of the world, it's not because for any other reason than that one. We can't say "Europeans are more open to the world" cause that's only a matter of point of view. Chinese people are also completely focused on themselves for about the same reasons.

Try Southern Alberta. :p Central Alberta is Edmonton.

Why is the maps insulting?? I am an American and I think they are fun.

Exactly my point! Cities just aren't that important to me, and I'll usually get them mixed up. I do at least know most countries, though (except some of the ones in central africa) and that's a lot more important.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

oh man those are some funny maps

I am also an American and it doesn't bother me, for those that are insulted think of it like this if others truely believe that Americans think the world is like that then they are the ones who are truely ignorant

Exactly right;)

To anyone offended:
Sorry the joke bothered you. I posted the map cause Longasc asked for a funny map. I have dual-citizenship and have no problems with jokes about either Canada or the US, they're just humor! I did mention I got it from the coliseum (humor and jokes section)

To everyone that found it funny:
Good to see cooler(and with more a sense of humor) heads have prevailed :goodjob:

I am pretty sure every American Civ3 player knows the exact location of every goody hut on the Teturkhan Map, so nobody should take these worldmaps too serious. :)

I wanted to add a funny flavor to a statement like "look, the americans have no impression where Rome is at all, how can they be excited about a novel playing in Rome - they do not know it, it's far away. Could Europeans be excited about a similar novel in Seattle or San Francisco? Do we really know much more about San Francisco than that there is a bridge and Chinatown?"

On a sidenote, most chinese restaurants in Germany have the name "Chinatown". Boring! I am so glad that my favorite has the name "Mandarin". :)

I originally started this thread asking for a map - if you know "Angels & Demons" from Dan Brown, you might be interested, too, why it is so extremely successful in Germany and Europe in general. I will check out how it does in Italy soon.

Ugh, if nobody has anything more to say, I want to say THANK YOU again, especially to those taking it with good humor.

I think we should let this thread vanish or perhaps a mod will close it, at least I have nothing more to add. :)
