Here's the scenario:
I trade Dyes with the Celts for GPT. The Celts have a MPP with China. I can attack China, forcing the Celts to declare war and break a GPT deal with me. I do not need the gold and the Celts are on another island.

I would think that the Celts reputation would be damaged and they could not trade for GPT with other AI civs. A good thing to do because it weakens the AI, no?

Are there times where you would not want to damage an AI's reputation? After all, I could still trade GPT with them as long as my reputation is OK even though the AI wouldn't.

Usually AI's are not hurt if their reputation is broken. Other AI's will not care most of the time, and all it does towards the human is your foreign advisor calling them liars.
So you shouldn't count on hurting an AI if you break their reputation.

Yes, they couldn't care less of their respective reputation. It's only important that yours remains intact. With a good rep you can buy a tech for a good amount of gpt, then, next turn, declare on someone who has an MPP with the civ you're paying gpt. They will declare on you, thus negating the gpt payment, but your reputation remains intact! You'll have earned a tech almost for free.

I think the whole reputation thing should be completely revised in Civ4. It doesn't any make sense that you can't even trade 1 gold per turn when you're making 1000 gold per turn just because your trade route got accidentally cut off by a barbarian galley or because one of your resources got depleted.

I think reputation should be gradual, just like the AI attitude. Something like "impecable/good/fair/questionable/attrocious". Depending on how good your reputation is you should be allowed to use up to a certain percentage of your income in trades. It should also be more civ-specific. If I betrayed A, and B is furious with A, then I should not have a bad reputation with B, even if A and B are not at war. Certain things should be temporary, while others could have a permanent effect on reputation.

The way the whole rep hit thing works right now is very annoying because you must be extremely careful not to break your reputation. If you do then you can no loger trade effectively for the rest of the game.

Not only it's quite moronic, but it can be exploited. Now, someone who earn from you a tech paying it in 20 turns, and next turn forces you to declare on him, losing both the gold and the reputation! Wouldn't be a dirty scumbag bastard son of #@#@@@#@#@ ?!?! But its rep stays intact... and that's exactly what you do with the AS. :D

I agree with u that the whole thing should be revisited a little. Let's hope in Civ4...
