Everyone wave hi to the newbie! I've been coming to Civ Fanatics for awhile now but never seriously got into the game until this week. See I had the week off work and got stuck into playing CivIII. Boy did I get whalloped!

Strategy is not my strong point, hence my frequent visits here. I just finished a game today where I accidentally won a cultural victory when I was all set to take over the last of the Babylonians.

My question is this, even though I won a cultural victory, and had a score of 1157 (Chieftan, Large Map, Russian) I was still labelled as "The Cruel"

What score do I need to have to get beyond Cruel? This was the best game I've ever played (so far) so I need some advice!

Wishful Thinking...The Cruel!

get more points...Im Philippe I AKA Otto Bismarck the maginificient
Ruler of Germany,France and Russia!

First of all, you make a very nice introduction! :goodjob:

The "Dan Quale" rating is based on your score and your score is largely based on the following:
- Number of (happy) citizens troughout the game.
- Number of tiles under control troughout the game. So within your cultural borders.
- An early finish bonus.
- A difficulty level modifier, i.e. the higher your diff. level the higher your score will be.

The Future advances do not really add up a lot, best to ignore them. None of the high scores in HOF have a lot, if any, future advances in their score.

So, what is a good approach?
- Citizens and tiles are averaged over all game turns. ICS and early access to luxuries combined with marketplaces help most.
- Either finish VERY early, BC or so, or milk the game to the end.
- Play on as high a diff. level as you can manage.

Last note: CivIII scoring system is far from being ideal. If you are looking for a skill based scoring system please check the Tournament forum.

try the GOTM that might be a good place to start then you can compare your results with other people

Hmm...good advice guys! Thanks.

Now, the thing is, I had a lot of tiles under my control, my entire continent as well as a few islands. I had all the city improvements I could have in most of my cities and was still sending out settlers by the end. Of my entire population (some cities were up to the 20's) I had about 3 unhappy people. The rest were happy or specialist.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll be sure to check out the Tournament forum as you suggested Beammeuppy (nice name btw!)

If you did well but you still got a low score, remember that you're playing on Chieftain. I think this is how it goes: Chieftain keeps the base score, Warlord multiplies it by 2, Regent by 3, Monarch by 4, Emperor by 5, and Deity by 6. Also remember that score is the average score of all your turns, not just your score at the end of the game.
And happy civving! :) :)

I agree with willj:
My scores did not amount to much fun when I familiarized myself with civ3 on chieftain. I remember ending up at about your score at some occations. On Warlord I got a score between 2000 and 3000 most of the time, and my best score ever was on Regent (my first regent win btw) where I won with a little over 3000 points. If cultural victory surprises you - try the milking tactic refered to in this thread, turn the option off or d/l the Apollo; a helpful little program to determine when/if you will achieve cultural victory. You will find it in the forum. Cant remember the url.

I find myself in awe of the more experienced players ;) Every once in a while I find a helpful bit of strategy in the forum. Otherwise I try to find my own way in the game.
Don't be afraid to move up. You will probably beat the AI anyways :)

I'm playing Chieftain for now until I get used to the ins and outs of the game. I suppose once I wean myself of the easy level I will see higher scores!

Paalikles, I'm with you, I couldn't imagine playing at the Deity level but some people do and they kick a$$ !!

Willj, I discovered that I did have the Cultural Victory option ticked when I started the game. Needless to say I won't be having that anymore!

I also noticed that I got a higher score in one of my games where I actually declared war on a civ...another game I played and I didn't attack anyone, my score was significantly lower!

Wishful Thinking

Did you realize that a score of 1157 will actually get you 8th place in the Hall of Fame (Chieftain level)? Maybe you should send yours in! :) (Assuming your game meets the requirements, which it might not.)

Thanks Willj, I'm not sure if it meets the requirements.

This particular games I only played against 1 civ...nothing spectacular about that! Once I get the hang of things I'll play more civs and then hopefully it'll be good enough for the HoF.

I also only saved the game a few years before the end.

And lastly...when I enter the HoF...I wanna be 1st!

:) Wishful Thinking...in my dreams!

Cultural victory is difficult to get (especially accidentally) in harder difficulty levels, you may want to revise that option later.

Also, if anyone can tell me about GOTM - I'm playing on a modified civ3mod file, will those games be with my settings (and therefore illegal) or the legal ones on the machines they were created on? (Same with tournament) If there's no answers here, i can ask elsewhere, the thought just came to me then.

bobgote: I have never participated in gotm, but I think the point of the game is that everyone has an equal chance to try to win the game with the already selected preferences, difficulty and civ. Therefore, I guess gotm is played with default rules - the exeption being that some game options may be turned on or off (like AI respawn and such) thuse making any modified ci3mod "illegal". Feel free of course to correct me if I am wrong ;)

to enhances your score, you need large/happy cities. You also need lots of temples/catherdals/libraries/universites and research labs. Having these for a long duration of time also boosts your score termendously.

Since you only played against one civ, your game won't be eligible for the HoF. (I think the minimum for standard size map, the smallest eligible map, is four.) :(

Four?!!

I don't think I'm quite ready for four yet ! I might go up to 2 this week but I want to do things slowly so I do things right!

But my goal remains the same...one day I will be in the HoF!

Wishful Thinking....really wishing!

The best way to increase your score is to perform better in the game. While there are many cosmetic actions that will increase your score, the best way is to play better. It appears that you are already doing that and each game will only help. Therefore, I would suggest two things.

1, Check out the succession game threads, especially the training game threads. If you can, try to participate in one of the next ones.

2. Try a game two levels above what you are now doing with max opponents. Yeah, you might get creamed, but you'll get valuable experience. Then try one level lower. The major difference in levels is the speed at which they produce and research. With more opponents, you actually help yourself at the upper levels, because of trading.

Of course, do whatever you want to do and feel comfortable doing. And continue to check some of these threads. There are some great ideas here.

GOTM is only accepted if using unmodified files. So you'd have to change to original files.

Oh, and have fun:)!

my question is not that, but whether the game is played using my civ3mod file or the one they created it on, the rules are dependant on this file. Don't worry i have an easy way to see, start a game and see if it has default rules.

Thanks ukrneal for the advice!

I do try to settle my land as fast as possible but I'm still sending out settlers towards the end of the game as well to the more remote areas of my map. This affects me greatly because it takes longer to build the libraries and such.

I guess I should be settling even more quickly!

Tomorrow I'm going to try playing on Monarch with 3 civs...I'll let you all know about it! Watch Wishful get 'creamed' as ukrneal so aptly put it! :0

Wishful Thinking...cringing!
