Okay, I'm in the middle of a game and am about to change governments. I don't want to fall behind though, so I was wondering if there was any way to reduce the time I spend in anarchy. I'm not a religious civ though. I read somewhere that in civ II you get out of anarchy on certain dates, such that if you start a revolution the turn before it won't last that long. Is that true in civ 3? Also, do happy people play any factor. Every one of my citizens is happy right now (I haven't started the revolution yet) will that help?

well, thanks for the help

Dont think you can change it, I might be wrong though.

It always seems about 5 turns to me

The time you spend in anarchy depends on the number of cities you have. The more cities, the longer the time. And if there's anything to be done to lessen the time spent in anarchy, I haven't found it.

I was under the impression (mainly from old posts here) that the number of happy citizens decreases the time spent in anarchy. Since I read that, I have tried to make sure there are few unhappy citizens and my anarchy usually lasts for around 3 turns.

I didn't realise that Empire size (no. of cities) affected anarchy time.

It's random, between 1-6 turns. It may be affected by empire size or happiness, but I'm not sure. Once you're in anarchy, you can check with your domestic advisor (F1) and she'll say something like "we'll have the gov't under control in 3 turns." It cycles with her other comments so you might have to hit the 'more' buton a few times.

I'm not sure if its affected by things, although I bet it is. IIRC, though, I think I've been in anarchy for more than six turns, around 8 in some games. But to be on the safe side, I would definitely assume that your empire size affects the length.

In the current GOTM, I had 98% happy people, but still the switch to democracy took 7 turns.

Remember to micromanage all cities! If possible, feed your citizens. Maybe even grow pop. Create 1 scientist to keep researching. Create as much taxmen as possible, because you don't produce anything, but you can still earn money.

Three terms before end of anarchy, try to trigger wltkd to start producing with low corruption (create taxmen, entertainer for this purpose).

To sum it up: you still have work do do in anarchy. :D

I remember reading a post about this not too long ago... can't find the thread, though...

IIRC, two factors affect the length of Anarchy. The first is empire size. The bigger the empire, the longer anarchy lasts. The second is a random number, between 1 and 6, I believe. It then adds the two numbers together to giv eyou the number of turns anarchy. I believe the minimum a non-religious civ can have is 2, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: Ahh, found the thread.

The last post, by Charis, gives a link to a post by Catt on Apolyton, which explains the factors involved, and provides a link to Soren's comments.

For those of you too lazy to check it out, this sums it all up:

Soren confirmed (way back in February) that the length is always between 1 - 5 turns on a random basis, with an additional 0-3 turns depending on number of cities, producing a range of possibilities of between 1 and 8 turns.

Oooh, thank you! I never knew about this. Will end the frustration I get waiting for anarchy to end.

I had a 1 turn anarchy in my last game as the Greeks.

I seemingly ended an anarchy with a golden age. IIRC, I did not spend one turn in anarchy when I changed to a republic since I changed governments then triggered my GA on the same turn. I may have been lucky but I think triggering a golden age will end anarchy. Some of the pro's will know whether this is true or not.

With religious civs, I usually go to the new goverment on the next turn... announce anarchy one turn, change the next.. I have had 8 turns with large empires... It is especially frustrating to have a 100+ democracy collapse... :(
