So I decided(being stubborn and all) that if I can't return this game I will just have to get by with hovering the cursor over a terrain to find out what it is. Not the best method, but it works. Then, about 1700AD, pop goes the terrain. There is no black to be seen, and everythin is lookin nice.

This blows the "Video chipset is no good" idea out of the water. Cause I assure you, I did not put a new chipset onto my laptop's video card while it was running, in the middle of playing, in a few nanoseconds. Shall we all raise the cry: THIS IS A GAME BUG. It might only affect some vid cards, but I think that this can now officially be called something which can be fixed, since it fixed itself midgame on my game. It probably has something to do with fog of war effects, cause I had cleared 90% of the map by that time. I hope this shines a ray of hope on those of you who fear they can't ever play normally.

Try using the Yields display and Resources display toggles on the Mini Map in the early stages of the game. This gives you all the terrian info you need to decide on where to place your cities.
