The reason that these terrorists are so pissed off with the US and are attacking us is, supposedly, because we bombed them during the Persian Gulf War, and in subsequent actions thereafter (such as operation Desert Fox). Also because we supply Israel with weapons. Combine these factors, and you get some very pissed off and very angry middle-eastern people.
But because we obliterated the strongest military force in the middle east, Iraq, during the Operation Desert Storm, Their governments are unable to do anything in retaliation. So that leaves TERRORISM as the only recourse of the common man looking for revenge. And that's what will draw people to being recruited into a terrorist organization.
The only way to completely pacify an enemy territory, and rid them of terrorists, is NOT by nuking them, sending cruise missiles at them, or by just simply sending multiple airstrikes against them. The only way to do it is by sending in the good old-fashined Infantry, and occupying them. <img src="graemlins/snipersmilie.gif" border="0" alt="[Sniper]" />
Despite the popularity of so-called "push-button Warfare": it is impossible to pacify any population without occupying them. Airstrikes do cause massive ammounts of damage and inflict lots of casualties on the enemy, but the survivors are incredibly vengeful and the hard-liners will resort to terrorism. <img src="graemlins/hammer.gif" border="0" alt="[Hammer]" />
