The title says it all, has anyone managed to cinch this wonder on Emperor+ difficulty? I've been really wanting to try and grab it for Russia, and I'm willing to orient my build/civilization around it, but it seems like the ai always grabs it around turn 100, give or take 8ish turns. I've managed the Great Library, but I've never even gotten close to this wonder (or the oracle as it happens).

It’s funny, I had the exact same question. I’ve tried several games now, on the continents map, immortal. Most wonders I can get, but this one, it’s always gone by turn 100, even with only 5 other AIs competing.

Now I’m theorycrafting, trying to figure out how to build the damn thing in time. It’s not even that good for most builds, but if I’m doing something with border scaling (like celts + Epona), it seems important to get, so I’m sad when I keep failing!

I’m thinking that getting science going is critical. However, with Epona, border expansion helps science. So monument is still important on new cities, followed by council, then library (the instant these build, I lock the citizen into the scientist specialist slot, as keeping up with science on immortal is quite challenging).

I’ve also been going for great library, possibly followed by Teracotta Army. But I’m considering not bothering with Terracotta, as it increases the build cost of Angkor Wat. In fact… perhaps even the great library is a mistake due to the build costs. I will try skipping any other wonders and report back.

Babylon just completed Angkor Wat on turn 86 on pangea, immortal. Probably an edge case as they're very good for science.

Update! Success! I completed Angkor Wat on turn 91 (could have even done it on turn ~88 if I paid the gold). Small pangea, 5 AIs, including Babylon and Russia, but Russia declared war on Babylon about 20 turns ago, possibly preventing them from going for their wonders. I took Great Library then Angkor Wat, with no other wonders prior to that. I expanded twice, three cities total at the time of finishing Angkor. I had a strong start with lots of room to expand and great resource tiles as well. Two lapis lazuli gave me a great science advantage, and flood plains gave me some extra food.

The AIs get some very generous bonuses at this stage which means late classic wonders are almost always out of the question even on emperor.
I have had games where I managed to build one of them and done that with all the late classic era wonders but its rarely something I go push my luck for as the chance to fail is massive.

I can't guarantee to get any Classical wonders on Emperor, but I can usually get some.

Pyramids/Stonehenge are almost guaranteed or achievable in Immortal in my experience
Classical wonders however are way harder to get.
once i see the Maya or China in my game i know i'm not getting any classical wonders.

After playing around with many more Celts Epona games, and watching Milae vids, I’ve come to the conclusion that policies are very important for getting Angkor Wat (ok, it’s obvious in hindsight). Playing honor weakens your science substantially, which is what was making Angkor so hard to get for me. I went tradition and got it faster and easier. I bet liberty would also work well. Honor could be holding you back.

I also suspect that honor may require a little more skill, because knowing how to move your troops near city states to demand tribute without opening yourself up to attack seems very difficult to do in early eras beyond the ancient era. However, it is fun, so I keep playing it and trying to get better. Celts with their Pictish warriors are incredible for demanding tribute though.

Bruh I have never even been able to contend for this one. I feel I often go for other wonders anyways but like I don't think it has even been an option on my production options. Interesting discourse bout the strategies for this though.
