Is there any way to turn off the animations? There used to be an option in civ 4 im sure, but i cant see an obvious one in this version.

Cheers

Also, can anyone suggest a mod that will work on a saved game that will get other civs expanding?

Yes, in the advanced set up screen scroll down and on the right hand side there are a series of options one of which is 'quick combat'.

If the other civs aren't expanding then you're probably on too low of a level, don't think you could change it midgame though. Start a new one on immortal or something?

Ive done that but i want to stop all the workers moving and birds flying around sea resources etc. Doing that really helps the game run better.

I will have to start again i think. I started on warlord which in past civs has been a reasonable challenge for me (im crap) and anything above that seemed to make things so much harder. but i think the AI has got worse in this version. They just seem to denounce and start wars constantly even when they are weak. For instance, i just liberated germany from the russians and gave them back some cities. Then, germany go denouncing everyone, start a war with russia again and get thumped.

I get the feeling this is more of a version made for modders to have fun with and not the average player.

Or they didn't expect you to resurrect defeated civs. I've found that this never seems to be a viable proposition as once defeated, they can never rise again. Incidentally, if you do raise a civ from the dead, they keep their old alliances and enemies, so your previous experience with them is the most likely course.
