Annoying problem with reputation hits

Hello everybody! I'm having a problem with reputation hits.

I was planning an attack on Rome, several turns before I moved my troops into Caesars territory I made sure that I had no ROP or any other deal with him, 'cause that would hurt my reputation, right?

I moved my troops into his territory, he demanded that I moved them or declare war, I declared war... The next turn almost every civ in the whole game ended our ROP-agreement. When I didn't have a ROP with them, many of them became annoyed, and we all know how disturbing that can be when you're trying to make a deal.

To my question. What am I doing wrong? How can my reputation be hurt when I don't break any deals? Do I have to break the Peace Treaty before moving my troops into his territory?

I would really apreciate if someone helped me with this one. :)

If you had a peace treaty with them, then attacked them, that's a hit to your reputation. I'm not surprised the other civs don't trust you now. Not sure what advice I can give, but I think you're in a tough spot now. Usually when my rep gets bad I'll bail out of a game and try again.

You can't be in the Romans territory when you declare. Declare outside his territory and then move in. Early game you also need to be aware of your coastal sea lanes being broken. If you had to cross through Roman waters for any deal with another AI that deal is broken too.

If they took some of your territory, they'll want more money for RoP than before.
Maybe you have "auto renegotiate deals" on and you made all of that RoP's 20 turns before.

Ok, then I know for next time.

Does my reputation get hurt if I move my troops into his territory and then break the peace treaty?
Or do I have to break it before I move into his territory?

Edit: Whomp, you answered my question before I asked it. ;)
Thank you very much, hopefully I don't need to hurt my reputation by mistake any more. :)

You sneak attacked them by not declaring war BEFORE entering their territory.

It's not that bad of a hit. The AI does it all the time.

Just give away some lux and the others will get over it.

But no one will ever sign a ROP with you again. That's what ruining your reputation does. Giving gifts only affects their attitude, which is completely seperate from reputation.

In order to declare war with no reputaion hit: make sure you have no active deals with your target, make sure you have no units in their territory, then declare war and move into their territory. Or get them to declare war on you.
