When a civ tells you that your troops are in their borders the options include 1) apologize and tell them you are going to remove them 2) Ask for a right of passage 3) Declare war and 4) "That's it. Goodbye."

I was just wondering whether choosing option 4 makes them mad at you versus choosing option 1. When I choose option 4, nothing seems to happen.

option 4 =option 1 there is no difference

Thank you!

Could I ask another question?

There's a German galley in my borders and I can't seem to get it to leave! Every turn I ask Germany to withdraw its troops and every turn Germany apologizes but nothing happens. I never get the "Withdraw your troops or declare WAR!" option. Is it because the Germany galley is not that close to one of my cities? Or maybe it's because there's no way for it to get out since it can only travel along the coast?

Please help :)

I believe you have to ask them to move 2 turns before you get the "Withdraw your troops or declare WAR!" option. I'd like to see that changed, especially when the AI is in your territory turns 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, ..., which I have had happen. The AI really wanted to get through there.

The fact that its a Galley is irrelevant to its territory invasion (I once held up a galley 10 turns before finally deciding to let it get back home).

Also, if the units are relatively 'low threat' (you could take the galley out with a battleship) then it takes longer to get to the 'leave or declare' option.

What you could do is get a fleet of five or so of your own ships and block the enemy galley that way. It might have the ability to go around the blockade, so make sure you have enough ships to do so.

This is one of the few things that really bother me about Civ3. If you don't want them in your territory, you should be able to make them leave or declare war.

yes but i've noticed you can if more than one unit is adjacent to a city of yours but not if its beyond 2 squares.

Could be, I've never noticed that. Never looked for it, really.

Then the trick is to make them stop next to one of your cities....

I think past "relations" also matter.

Just yesterday, i had been in a war with my neighbour, where HE declared, breaking a 20 turn deal. I killed his Sod and moved my units back to their defensive positions on the hills. (was busy with someone else so no time to conquer him)

On of my opponents units was still in my territory though when we had peace again.

It was on the edge of my territory, my cities there had at least radius 2, possibly 3. Definitaly not adjacent to a city. At least 1 tile between them. (my units on defensive hills were between the unit and my cities)
It was only 1 unit, a longbowman.

To my suprise when i asked them to leave, i got the "or declare" thing to ask them. Even more to my suprise, they declared a few turns after they payed me for peace :)

Re: Galleys etc. I think it's to do with the military threat posed by the unit in question.

Scouts, Curraghs, etc. can't attack units or capture cities - so the AI lets them through without excepting, unless they're really annoyed at you.

Galleys are usually okay, unless they have troops on them.

You can't give the 'Leave immediately or delcare' order against empty Galleys - not so sure about bigger ships.

Neil.

You can use the empty galley tactic on the AI for exploration. They will ask your galley to leave, but they will never pop up the "leave or declare war" window. You can explore all through their coastal territory and they won't be able to do a darn thing about it.

I think you can do the same thing with a worker. If you don't have any fresh water but your neighbor does, move in a worker and have him irrigate all the way to the border. Don't stack a military unit with it or you will get the "leave or declare war" pop up.

Of course, this does affect their attitude but only while your units stay in their territory. As soon as you leave, it will be like you were never there.

That happened to me too. My impression was that they were insulted. I think it's like saying "No" to their demand, then it's up to them if they want to declare war or not.

Using option 4 when they ask you to remove or declare war is equivalent to declaring war (if the option ask before declaring war is on, you get a pop up saying "do you really want to declare war" when you click on option 4). I do not know though if they grow angrier when they just say that your troops are in their territory (first warning) and you use option 4.

exactly, they would have declared war if you had hit option 1

Don't you mean that options 3 & 4 are the same?

Option 1 = Apologize and leave
Option 2 = Request right of passage
Option 3 = Declare War
OPtion 4 = Goodbye

oh sorry, i thought sabo was refering to when it was a leave or war scenario, my fault

Option 4 leads to war if you have the "<your troops will leave immediately>" thing in Option 3.
