I mean if the resources is far away from a city (out of city radius) and wanted to connect to that city or civ, do i just use a worker to build road to it if i don't want to build a city next to it ?? any other way ???

build a colony on it.Move worker on to the resource and build(B).Make sure to have road to it.

As long as the resource (assuming stragtegic or luxury resource here) is withing you cultural borders and is connected to your cities with roads, you automatically have access to it.

If it's outside your cultural boundaries, you'll need to build a colony on it, or a city next to it (and still connect that colony/city to your main road network). Keep in mind that colonies disappear when they fall in someone else's boundaries (which also happens when someone else builds a city next to it). So if you desperately need that resource (and want to deny other civs that resource) and it's not within your borders you should seriously consider building a city on/next to it. Even if that city will have problems to grow.

So colonies have no defence ?? can I place a spearman and fort(F) there ?

I'd waste the 2 population points just to deny the other civs the chance to get the resource. Building a city next to it is what I've done. One pop point for a worker, 2 pop points for a settler. For me the extra pop point is worth the security of owning a resource as long as that city is yours. I tend to play the resource hog strategy. So I gobble up as many resources as soon as I see them. Thats what I've done in every game I've been able to so far. Civ 3 requires that you chage your strategies from game to game. There doesn't seem to be a "This strategy will lead you to the promised land 100% "

I'd build a city if I could or a colony then a city later.

:)

I never build colonies anymore. IMHO they need fixed in a patch. That they can be gobbled up by an opponent simply by putting a city next to it makes them next to useless. I'm sure you can find a few uses for them, but by in large they are a waste. Much like privateers in the current setup. 1 out of every 100 games you will find a use for them, other than that they are useless.

The only time I ever use colonies is when I know that resource is going to be engulfed within my cultural boundaries within one or two growths. Otherwise, if it's that far away, build a city next to it. Even if it won't grow and it's only purpose is to guard that resource.
