It is the future. People didn't believe global warming was going to happen, but it did. The future held many extreme conditions, such as deserts and tundras. Many people were wiped out in the flooding and barbarian tribes emerged. The amount of land started shrinking.

You are America. You are mad that the world didn't believe you and now you will take revenge on the rest of the world for thinking you were crazy.

The Settings:

Map Size: Large.
Map Type: Continents, 80% water.
Barbarians: Raging.
Climate: Arid and Cool.
Elevation: 5 Billion years old.
Difficulty Level: Emperor. (Thanks Phaedo! :D)

Civilization: America.
Civ3 Version: C3C/Conquests.
Proposed Victory Condition: Conquest.

Roster:

I'm over committed with SGs right now but it's an interested set-up.
What level are you thinking of playing?

Now that is what I call ironic. :mischief:

Good luck, Ansar.

Me too. Doesn't America's car industry suck the most (in terms of emissions) still? That's a little weird.

I can join this as long as the long part (Middle Ages and beyond or wars will seemingly come after mid-May). As it's mid-April, okay. Sign me up then. (Yay my first SG in a long time.)

Well, you know us Americans. We say one thing but when the other one comes true, we immeadetily claim responsibility and say "I told you so!" (:shifty:). ;)

Ok, Tribute, you're on the Roster.

Hi, I'm a longtime silent lurker who took a small step and registered for the forums a couple days ago. I posted a bit under a different account back in '02-'03 and have recently gotten back into the game. I generally play at the emperor-dg levels right now.

I'd love to sign on to the roster if you have a place for a new poster/person. If not, I'll just lurk a bit and watch how this game goes.

No problem!

Welcome oogieboogie! :)

Well, if I join, this will be my first Succession Game ever, so count me in (Hopefully I can handle Emperor).

Are we doing that 10/20 turn rule thing? Where we play some turns, say what happened on them, and post the save?

3 nice starts to choose from (they all have cows! :D)

With the setup the way it is these generalizations are likely to be true...
  • Our continent will be crowded
  • There will be sizable patches of tundra and desert
  • Iron may be a problem
  • Given the above, quality city sites will be few and in demand

#1
Pros:
-2 cows (1 E/SE in the fog)
-Fresh water
-Good wood
-Capital could be a 4-turn settler farm
-All enemies likely to be S of us more or less

Cons:
-6 tundras/forested tundras in the capital's full radius - YUCK!
-No bonus grasslands nearby without a lucky chop
-Iron possibilities may be far away

#2
Pros:
-2 cows in the initial city radius
-A third cow 2S in the fog
-Fresh water
-Capital could be a 4-turn settler farm
-3 dies (at least) in the city radius
-Our closest enemies will probably be to the S

Cons:
-3 mountains and 6 deserts (possibly one or more are flood plains though) in the full city radius
-Desert to the W, NW, N and E in the fog
-The likelihood that the river's course leads to little beyond a worker farm
-No grasslands except perhaps in the far S
-Our closest enemies will probably be to the S (yes, I put this in twice on purpose)

#3
Pros:
-2 cows, 1 being in the fog E/SE -- (irrigate the Moo Moo's, there's shields elsewhere)
-Fresh water
-A luxury in the fog to the S
-2 bonus grasslands
-Good wood
-Capital could be a 4-turn settler farm
-2 rivers to follow for other city sites/enemies
-Best iron possibilities nearby of all 3 starts
-Only 2 bad tiles in the city radius - both mountains

Cons:
-Desert patch appears to be hiding off to the SW
-The possibility that we are on a small bulge on the E side of the continent - there's water SE and NE... if those are salty they may be surrounding our entire E side from N to S just outside of our current view
-Rivals could be all around us and in close (down each river, across the desert to the S, and even E if we're not near the coast)

All that being what it is... I vote for number 3 first, with number 2 a distant second.

Tribute - Start 2
oogieboogie - Start 3
d. highland - start 3
ansar - start 3

3 > 1. Start #3 it is. :)

I'll play later today. Discussion in progress.

My fast count is 37 turns to complete the necessary worker tasks to set up #2 as a 4-turn settler factory vs. 30 turns for #3. There may be some ways to shave a turn or two but I think the counts are pretty accurate.

Opening Questions
What tech shall we research first?
Any particular paths you guys think we should take?

I think we should go in the BW - IW path, if at least to spot the Iron early on. :hammer:

Nice calculations. I'm not exactly an expert on settler factories, I just know that it is always necessary to maintain +5 food surplus at all times.
