Any desire for a custom Civ 2 scenario engine?

This would be pretty cool. Aren't you worried about copyright issues though?

I'm not worried about copyright issues. I don't intend to bundle any copyrighted artwork with my game. I do intend to use some of the graphical formats from Civ 2 though. Specifically, the 32 x 16 diamond shaped terrain tile.

The reason I want to use Civ 2 graphics is to allow modders (including myself) to use other people's preexisting art. I won't have to come up with all new art with a new dimension, or anything else.

The other goal I'm working toward is to allow Civ 2 scenarios to be loaded and playable as if you were playing Civ 2. The reason for that is so that all of those old Civ 2 scenarios will have a permanent home. And I can also improve on the Civ 2 game, which will never happen with the commercial version.

I suspect the Freeciv team will find some way to load Civ 2 games before I do.

You plan on supporting ToT and its sprite images/animations too (not to mention its extra events, rules and maps)?

And since you've been working on it for a year: how far along are you? What can your game do so far?

What programming language are you using?

Phlegmak:

I would strongly urge you to continue your efforts.

I checked your website and those radiation effects are killer :)

I found this all pretty interesting until you said you weren't supporting ToT. That's the only CivII I play anymore, so I guess this has just become pointless from my perspective.
