Hey u guys got a question that may be other people may want answers too also...

When I got the PTW game when I came out, the civ I realy didn't play with was Carthage.

Today I have played a small game realizing how powerful its UU is and was wondering if there is any good strategies to go with it...

Like how and when is it good to attack? Whether to use it as an attacking unit or just defense?

If you guys are into Carthage and have any in-game strategies or tips, please tell me.

Thanks!

I rarely build defenders in single player, it's cheaper and more effective to kill attackers with offensive units. Just put 2 warriors in every city, build a good road network, and have some horsemen patrolling.

Carthage is the best builder civ in multiplayer, thanks to their 3-defense ancient unit and industrious trait.

Theres a good side in Numidian Mercenarys cost, you can upgrade unit cheaper:)

Tactical use for NuMe

Early war:
- mix with archers 1:3, attack only weak units.

Later:
-inexpensive defender to stop swords & knights. Stack em on a hiil/muntain + build fortress.

Strat carthage:
- be builder, get the GLib + H Garden,

You're just trying to get strats to beat me the All Human PBEM aren't you! (j'/k if course).

When I first got PtW I was Carthage. I had great luck with the RNG too so I could attack and defend and win battles I shoulda lost. Basically though, use them to attack warriors and archers, not spearmen/swordsmen though.

At 30 shields, losing a NuMe attacking would be quite costly, while few units would be able to take it out with a defense of 3 (except for maybe a dozen Jags, eh Sirp?).

A dozen? No no, you only need six or so :)

Even if the NuMe is a veteran fortified on hills, ten veteran jags would have over 80% chance of defeating it.

yeah, an archer that costs 50% more.

For some unknown reason, I've found Numidian Mercenaries to be far more effective at attacking than even a Medieval Infantry. I know statistacally that shouldn't be, but it always seems that way. I mostly use them to take out enemy fringe cities that lie relatively close to my territority. They're also good for getting rid of some pesky barbarians. But, of course, it's always best to use them for defense.

Carthage starts out poised for a quick rush to Great Library. I usually set research at 100% and make the rush. I get bronzeworking from a neighbor if possible and defend with the NM. I have used them on the offense when forced but I much prefer more mobile attackers such as chariots or horsemen (which is why I love the Celts). The industrious trait is my favorite civ trait. Can't beat the boost you get with a couple of workers early on chugging away to make your capital a wonder factory.

Carthage isn't really set to rush for the Library better than any other commercial civ.

If there's one civ that is great for going straight for the Library, it's the English. They can start researching Writing immediately and then go for their choice of map making or literature.

true, but while I'm waiting for Literature I use my hyped up workers to "overbuild" the terrain around my capital or most productive city. A few turns before I get Literature I start a high shield project in that city and immediately switch to GL when I can to get a cheap jumpstart. I nearly always get GL this way. Wars are usually what stops me from beating the other civs. I haven't actually noticed how it works out against the English but I suspect it does ok.

In all citys get a num mec and one or two warriors then concentrate on infastructure and science until med inf where you can upgrade your warriors to them and attack the nation. If yo have a good enough infastructure you could take away some of you projects and create a backup army of knights this gets you a conquest cheap and if you preserve you knights and med inf well enough they can be usefull to upgrade to cavalry and this sets you up for a long term powerfull army as then you upgrade num mec to riflemen and have a very modern army which took up very little production time and you got leo's workshop it can be very cheap too.
