Any Ideas On Adding Economy Features?

Pretend you have a Command and Conquer type game. How can you realisticly add global market features to the game?
In real life nations are bound by trade and economies. So how could it be added in a war game to make nations more allied due to economical factors.

One idea is adding oil, and oil poor nations need to be allied with oil rich (or occupy them) nations.

How about economically? Maybe a stock market type feature or national bonds???

I don't quite understand this stuff in real life, therefore, don't know how to add them in a game.
