the vvv thread gave me this bad idea, would anyone else be interested in completing a game with these settings:

askia
pangea
marathon
large
time victory
immortal

this is going to be a full 1500 turn game. if you're afraid of immortal, don't be... with marathon and askia odds are tipped in your favor pretty nicely.
given the time victory constraint i imagine you'll need to do a basic domination victory minus one capital, and possibly nuke that capital a few times to prevent them from building the UN or spaceship.

if at least two others will do it, i'll give it a go as well.

I'll give it a crack after I've done ShadeSigma's last challenge and Minor II

I'm really getting a nice queue of settings now I guess.

here's my initial report

setup:
Spoiler :

starting location:
i rerolled a few times until i got a location where most of the tiles would be useable. there are a couple mountain tiles but other than that it's looking good. plains for decent production, a deer and wheat in immediate vicinity so granary will be +4, and trapping luxuries so i won't need to get calendar.
Spoiler :

attachment.php

initial plans:
my overall goal is one city + every ai city (minus one capital) puppeted.
slightly earlier goal is to RA to chivalry and use madekalu cavalry to puppet my nearest neighbor, and take legalism for 4 mud pyramid mosques and +20 culture. i'll definitely block so first RA gets civil service, and hopefully get that signed before completing philosophy if an ai researches philosophy first. depending on AI cash availability i'd like to block on horseback riding and have 3 RAs for engineering and machinery and currency all before chivalry. i'd like time to build barracks, heroic epic and armory so i can pop out a few chariot archers with siege, and i'm a big fan of an early ironworks. i don't know if can expect to get 5 signed though

my build order will be scout, monument, granary, scout, national college
i'll take tradition, liberty citizenship, meritocracy, and i'll use the GE for a manufactory.

turn 200:
i got a culture ruin and population ruin within first 10 turns, nothing else too exciting.
i've got a peninsula all to myself, so there's little chance of being declared on unless caesar (aka target #1) decides to settle even closer. he did build a city right on the exit, but it's only 50 gold for 90 turns to get through.

lay of the land:

i've cleared a bunch of camps, my first exploratory scout has managed to clear 4 camps solo, one surrounded by french warriors with the barb at 1 hp, a couple empty ones, and one that a barb left to capture suleiman's worker. i captured the worker too, but it was recaptured by barbs on the long journey home. i should have just returned it for good relations with suleiman.

i initially planned on stealing a worker from my one CS neighbor, ragusa, but they requested i clear a camp so i ended up friendly with them instead. i've been slightly behind with just the one citizenship worker upgrading tiles.

blocking
Spoiler :
attachment.php

i've successfully set up 5 RAs thus far, blocking is mostly done,
218 i'll get civil service,
231 currency,
238 engineering
251 machinery,
277 chivalry (hopefully)
i'll complete metal casting after machinery, that'll only give me 10ish turns each to block steel and physics, which won't be enough to guarantee. i'll be signing another RA sometime soon hopefully as backup.

You know what I'll join you later today. First I am to do another G Minor II because I don't think my other one is good enough.

excellent. thus far it's been a pretty fun game... which i'm sure will change once the game is effectively over and i'm just waiting for the time victory.

Yeah, I'm ~350 turns in and I've just been backstabbed by England (expected) and then by America. Not happy about being called a warmonger when I've never gone outside my own borders and just act to protect myself.

Given I've lost 2 of my 5 cities though, I think this attempt is toast

Whelp I just started and I think I'm going to try Turtleing like a champ. Also makes the game run smoother early on.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I just took 3 or 4 of Napoleons city's... he was top dog for most of the game up until now. He kept offering a Peace Treaty with me giving him stuff than he finally offered me 3600 Gold to stop fighting... took that without a miss beat.

Right now I'm Researching until the Colosseum, I need the happiness.

P.S. Look how I started.... I'm in one of the greatest strategic locations. I don't haft to worry about my back or to the south. I plan on Allying the city state soon sp that I'd be aware of anything down there. The mountains are just perfect placement. Also the north of me is the end of the map. I'm set.

if you're having difficulty, there are two things that will help you supremely:

do RA blocking, sign 3 RAs that will get civil service, currency, and chivalry. try to have a few horsemen you can upgrade to muslim cavalry then and you'll immediately have a huge military advantage.

get the initial honor policy. after taking a neighbor or two you'll be able to get +225 gold every few turns by clearing a camp.

turn 300:
i didn't have any more horses, and didn't want to ally another cs for some, so i opened both chivalry and machinery both before the turn 251 ra hit, and happened to get chivalry.
i upgraded to two mandekalu, one with morale and siege, another with just siege. they made quick work of caesar's cities, literally 2 or 3 attacks to take them. i started at the top and went down and rush bought another mandekalu with the proceeds from sacking and a few encampments.
caesar had improved literally 0 luxuries, and he only had 2 workers for stealing. i was hoping for more. i let his cities level up my units a tiny bit then made peace, not taking his last city to avoid hate. my rush bought madekalu has march now and is 31 xp from blitz.

currently no one has any money for ras. my next RA with napolean will cause me to hit renaissance on turn 313, i only have two others signed. i'd like to get a few more in before renaissance so i don't have to pay premium. i'm probably going to start taking napolean's cities on 315 or so. i'm also a few turns from legalism for +20 culture, although one city is already halfway done building the mud pyramid mosque.

turn 400:

after my RA with napolean fired i declared war and took his 5 best cities. paris had built stonehenge, the colossus, and the hanging gardens.
since then i ran one of the highly leveled mandekalu and another bought one out to capture barb camps in other areas of the map. my scouts have fully exposed the continent and with honor i get notifications, so literally every 5 turns or so i'm getting +225 gold. i've left a few units fortified by napoleans cities for free exp, and burned two of the three great generals i've generated thus far when i was near 0 happiness. i built chichen first.

for now my happiness and population are pretty close so i'm not going to be conquering more until i get more social policies... i'll get scholasticism in a few turns, and in a about 20 turns i'll be getting biology after 3 RAs fire and will work down the middle of order.

turn 500:

1/3rd done...
i finally made peace with napolean for the small price of his few good cities. suleiman had declared on him and was threatening to take one of the cities i actually wanted.
i bought a couple trebuchets before chemistry so they could have full city bonuses, and have leveled them both up to have march and logistics, they'll both get +range soon too.

i have ... 5 RAs firing before turn 514 that'll get me a bunch of industrial techs, maybe some modern ones. some other RAs got me to my current point, i had a GE ready so i used the scientist from porcelain tower to get telegraph for cristo before next policy (educated elite).

not sure what my plans are for further domination at this point

I'd be interested in this. Are we playing off a set save-game or generating our own map?

EDIT: I've never done HoF stuff. I just read the rules, and I see we each generate our own maps. I'll start up a map under these conditions. Time victory should be hard to pull off, I've never done one before.

Are we free to post updates of our games in this thread?

the hardest part is going to be playing out the full 1500 turns.

yes, feel free to post updates of your game.

turn 600:
i'm down to dx9 mode... it was getting a bit sluggish in dx11.

cath made the mistake of building forbidden palace, which put a big old target on her head. i sent my two cannons, my initial warrior turned infantry, and a couple mandekalu turned cavalry and added russia to my puppet empire.

i have all of 3 oil in all my territory, but a russian city should be gaining a +7 oil in snow soon, and only 8 aluminum. i bought 2 bombers and 1 fighter with the oil, and have leveled the bombers up to air repair, logistics on poor copenhagen. currently there's no way i can get them over to real action, but when i go into total world domination mode they'll be helpful.

at present my plan is to take out washington next, mainly because he's near my level 11 artillery. i'm not in a huge rush so i'll build the pentagon first and upgrade my cavalry to modern armor. when i'm closer to finishing the tech tree i'll switch to piety, and get theocracy... when i've finally found religion i will begin mass genocide.

Turn Notes

Spoiler :

Start

Settings:

Songhai, Marathon, Immortal, Pangea.

All settings to default except ruins turned off - on immortal, I find ruins benefit the AI more than me. Turning them off is not against the rules of HoF as far as I can tell, correct me if that's wrong.

Turn 0:

Spoiler :
EA098F8B5186E0486B3838A3C76D53D8A85C1774

Nice start. Move the warrior onto the hill N. I decide to spend one turn to move my settler.

Turn 1: Settled 1 NE, 1 E of start location to pick up extra cattle and silver. Initial build worker, initial tech animal husbandry.

Spoiler :
4A00B0DB4B8F82D13E494B65CBBD0CDA4D7A42F6

Turn 9: Barbarian camp. The barb is already damaged - hopefully he took out an ai unit!

Spoiler :
DE1BAC8DD27B0C3AD203E8C1021C3FC2A720D656

Turn 17: Camp cleared. Used part of the proceeds to buy a riverside cow tile in my capital.

Spoiler :
6B464F2B46BE4C83379AEE61893397166246B7EE

Turn 23: There is another silver in range of my capital - that makes 3 silver and 1 gold within 3 of the capital, will be very nice with a mint once I get currency.

Spoiler :
4A57D5FA86FD644175C55672B2B1FB11AA56AA43

Turn 33: Met Oslo. Too bad they're maritime, I need a city state to farm for xp.

Spoiler :
EB2A76F1CA35B5F902A892E3E1D32802D555D6F4

Turn 41: Met Sidon. Hmmm.

Spoiler :
C62A37E53937C923266853101665D888B8B4D40A

Turn 71: Allied with Oslo (had friended awhile ago for 500G).

Spoiler :
C62A37E53937C923266853101665D888B8B4D40A

Farming XP at Sidon.

Turn 75: Warrior done in Gao. Building watermill.

Turn 76: Tradition picked for policy. I plan to boost my capital, then building a military. Teching horsebackriding for stables. One horse is within 3 tiles of my city. A fricken barbarian ship is messing with my XP farming - I can't take the dmg of two things hitting my initial warrior, especially dmg that doesn't give xp. I need an archer.

Turn 76: Nice city site SE of my capitol.

Riverside, 3 silver, sheep, deer, cattle. Yes please! I think I'll go liberty for settlers, then pop Legalism for Mud Pyramid mosques once I have the tech. Ramses is encroaching SW - he'll be my first target Civ after I take out Sidon. I know that once I have an army levelled enough to take out a city state, I have a good chance at taking out a civ with that army - training in the little leagues really helps.

(EDIT: Turns out my plans changed. War instead of settlers was the order of the day.)

Turn 80: Egypt is getting close
Spoiler :
F7328C60AF7906B4F4A2170FC28A240A62CE9E88

Turn 82: Barb encampment cleared. Good timing - my alliance with Oslo just expired, that gave me the 250 I needed to keep it going.

Turn 95: Ramses founds another city near me.

Spoiler :
F675F7A20ADE3364D48A5D21C0693BAC8953C673

Nice. They'll be easier to hook up with roads once I conquer them.

Turn 97: DoW on Ramses. I have one warrior to farm XP off him with. My other warrior is still farming at Sidon. Rush-bought scout to do some exploring while my two combat troops train.

Turn 98: Kill one egyptian warrior.

Turn 99: Watermill completed in Gao. Began producing warrior.

Turn 108: Killed egyptian scout.

Turn 109: Policy in. I change my mind - I take honour. I want the extra cash-flow from Songhai's UA. I'll try to rotate units into barbarian hunting for their first 10xp, unless there's a more pressing need.

Turn 112: Horseback riding done. Start mining for luxuries.

Egypt settles another city, only 4 tiles from my capital, stealing my horse.

Spoiler :
003A04CC2179D87703613D0CDF4A8B30E2646AF4

Hmmm.

Turn 115: Warrior finished in Gao. Production begins on stable.

Turn 119: Another 250 to Oslo. Capital is now size 6 though.

Turn 123: Hills in the third ring take forever for culture to take. I should have researched archery first.

Turn 125: Mining finished. worker moved to (non-luxury) hill to build mine. Archery began.

Turn 126: Great general born. He will help in the war against Egypt. Barbarian camp discovered east of Gao - no units free to go get it.

Turn 131: Treaty of friendship with England.

Turn 133: Silver/Hills tile bought for 330G. I needed another production tile, and the 2g extra is nice. It will be mined once the current mine is finished.

Turn 136: Sidon warrior killed.

Turn 137: Another Egyptian city on my borders.

Spoiler :
022CB42253A03C5C16E08B815AD12323FF9CD315

It's ok, stables almost finished - I'll be pumping out units soon, and none of these fast built cities have walls.

Turn 138: Archery finished. Started masonry - I'm going to want happiness buildings soon.

Turn 141: Sidon warrior is joining the fight against Egpyt. Will be in a position to attack in 3 turns.

Turn 143: Stables finished in Gao. Archer started. Now have 16 production per turn - archer finishes in 14 turns ( equivalent to 4 2/3 in standard).

Turn 148: First warrior with march. A little slow, but things were messy at points.

Turn 155: Finally finish a mine. I had to dodge an assault from Ramses from my east, and bring in a warrior - a lot of wasted worker turns.

Turn 156: Archer finished. Another archer queued (13 turns)/

Turn 158: Masonry finished. Construction queued.

Turn 161: Egypt allies Venice, as a result, venice declares war on me. Captured Alexandria - puppeted. This is good, Egpyt is on top of the leaderboard, good civ to take out early.

Turn 164: Egypt asks for peace - offers 100g, 1 gpt, and gems. No thank you Mr. Phaoroah sir.

Turn 165: Kill egpytian warrior coming in to reinforce Elephantine.

Turn 167: Kill egpytian scout coming toward Elephantine.

Turn 169:

Archer finished in Gao. Started on Pyramids - my army is strong enough now, and I'm starting to acquire land that needs to be developed, the faster the better.

Elephantine conquered.

Rush-bought worker in Gao. I'll need workers to develop my puppets - ramses hasn't built any I've seen yet that I could capture. Elephantine captured and puppeted. Sugar near Elephantine - I'll need to start teching to Calendar soon.

Turn 170: Worker sent to Alexandria to build pasture on horses (Gao is working this tile - more production for the pyramids - 20 per turn now)

Turn 171: Egypt capitulates.

Spoiler :
5397B426412ADF453E3465DC1DC0D1E4A96632C4

He offers me all his gold and cities other than his capital. I decline - I want the xp and the gold for capturing the cities, plus I'm only at +2 happiness. Waiting is in my interest.

Turn 172: Pi-ramesses captured and puppeted. -1 Happiness - but I have the gold to renew my alliance with Oslo thanks to the capture. +4 happiness with Oslo's furs.

Turn 174: Nice land I've taken! Lots of Rivers + Puppets = I'll be rich.

Spoiler :
CDA0802F647B71E051993A9DC45A2B2F2A7D5FB4

Turn 179: Policy time. Took discipline. Another GG born. Saving this one.

Turn 181: Heliopolis captured (puppeted). Happiness at zero. Culture spread to gold tile. Worker moved to start developing - will take 2 turns to reach. 500 Gold gifted to Oslo to extend Alliance (had only a few turns left).

Turn 182: Closing in on Memphis. Ramses has Horsemen now. No worries!

Spoiler :
F666C93DBC87B992CD145C755D9816CD31CCB0DC

Turn 185: My March warrior now has siege as well. Cool beans.

Turn 186: Construction completed. Began research on pottery.

Turn 187: Ramses the annoying decides to garrison Memphis with a chariot archer!

Turn 188: Too bad it was too little too late. Memphis captured, with the chariot archer inside... before he could fire a single shot. Worker captured - handy.

This happens far too often (see image).

Spoiler :
A812E7DA33C27A0A08249F64F829FFA4FACB1D92

Puppets that don't produce anything. They aren't in resistance, just doing nothing. I've tested before, and when you annex them, they always have a unit queued up - other puppets will have a building queued. There's a bug in there somewhere - it's like the puppet decides what to build as if it were an ai city, then if it's a unit, it's just blocked. Or something. In any case, it's annoying.

-3 Happiness. 13 Turns left on Pyramids.

Turn 189: Surprise DoW by Suleiman.

Archer rush-built in Gao.

Turn 193: Stonehenge built in faraway land.

Turn 196: Hanging gardens built in faraway land.

Turn 197: Egypt wiped out. Things are getting dicey at my capital.. Gao mis at 50% health. I think it's enought to hold out, however.

Turn 198: England denounces me. Great Lighthouse built in faraway land.

Spoiler :

Turn 199: The crossfire of Gao, Pi-Ramesses, Alexandria and my one bought archer kill off Suleiman's troops, save one lonely archer who is retreating North. My army is only a few turns away south, and will push my borders northward!

In summary. Single city, tradition then honour.

AH->Wheel->HBR->Mining->Archery->Masonry->Construction->Pottery->(Calendar)->(Writing)
Worker->Warrior->Water Mill->Warrior->Stable->Archer->Archer->Archer->Pyramids

3 Archers, 3 Warriors, 2 Great Generals; units well promoted.

6 Cities Puppetted, Positive Happiness, Pyramids, Maritime City State Ally. Bad relations with America & England (though they pretend to be friendly, they don't offer proper amounts for luxuries).

turn 700:

oh theocracy, you make me do bad things. on 630ish i finished up pentagon and upgraded all my units. i cleared out washington, and opening organized religion gave me a happiness golden age, so i started in on montezuma. my bombers were up to siege 2, bombardment 3, logistics, air repair, so i went ahead and upgraded those two to stealth and that gave them enough range to rebase and join the action. 2 rocket artillery, 2 stealth bombers, 2 modern armor made it so i was killing 6ish units and taking 1 or 2 cities per turn. when i finally hit theocracy my happiness jumped from 5ish to 95ish, even though i've more than doubled my number of cities since 600.

harun entered the modern era so when i finished off monty i headed down that way. on the plus side his cities are already connected via railroads and he has factories built, on the negative he has aa guns already which take two stealth bomber strikes to kill instead of one

back closer to home, i bought a few more bombers, made peace with and allied copenhagen and declared on caesar. i've queued up nothing but AA guns in gao to garrison in cities for happiness. it has every building built and there are no wonders left except sydney and un.

i still have to decide which capital to leave. liz will probably be the last civ i take out in the order i'm heading but she built notre dame. i'll have to verify it's in london. i'm thinking leaving gandhi as the last civ might be humorous. the only wonder he built was the oracle.
