Any MOD with improved air units?

Have not played CIV4 for quite a long period. Now start paying it again.

IMHO, air combat is a huge shortcoming of this wonderful game. It makes sense that an air unit can't eliminate a land unit, but it makes no sense that an airplane can't sink a ship.

I wonder if there is any MOD has fixed this bug? I mean in that MOD, a plane can sink ship but can't kill a land unit. Thanks in advance for anyone gives me an answer.

The Air Forces mod by Gedemon has this modded in. You can also check out the mod in my sig. I have lethal bombardment on ships, Dale's bombardment missions, more air units, a much improved air combat resolution routine, recon missions can be intercepted, AA guns, terrain protection from aerial bombing, and more... :deal: :lol:

Ninja2, thank you for reply. You made a very huge mod with many components. I wonder if I can turn on and off any combination of those components? Air Forces mod and Dale's mod look very attractive to me, but I am not sure about other feathures.

BTW, how difficult is making a mod like this? I am not a programer, is it a mission impossible for me?

Well, it might seem huge, but none of the changes make for a decidedly different game (there are certainly plenty of more radical, and excellent, mods out there). :) You'll still recognize CIV when you play it. Some of the components can be turned on/off in the GlobalDefinesAlt.xml, which is inside the Assets\XML directory. I've done quite a bit of explaining in that file, so it's easier to understand what does what.

I am no programmer either, so it is not mission impossible! :) I started out to just combine Wofshanze's mod with Dale's Combat Mod, and things just sort of grew. I only add components that I like myself. If other people like it, that's just fine with me! :D There are quite a few guides to get you started in the subforum Tutorials and Guides.

Perhaps my new combat mod will be a good solution for you in the future (~Februar 2009). It's called Experience and Combat Project (for CCV). It's not finished yet but a lot of components are done.

There are bombard missions similar to Dale's (Area bombardment, Military, Seaport, Airport, Industry, Current Production), a new Bombard Concept without damage limits and also a new interception concept. It makes for example a flak useful against fighters but useless against modern jet fighters or modern (high altitude) bombers. And their is so much more... Keep an eye on it. :)

Thomas,

Thank you for reply. Your project sound very interesting. I can't wait to play it. I just wonder if it is possible to turn on individual component in your mod?

BTW, did you change the combat algorithm in original Civ4?

Most simple mods are made with a mark up language instead of programming, modifying things is pretty easy for anyone, adding stuff gets a little tricky.

@Ninja2
Does your merged mod allow for air units to gain experience when air bombing barbarian units? I've been trying to find out how to give this ability for the Babylon 5 (Final Frontier) mod we are working on and so far have only been able to get air units gaining experience from buildings. I noticed ambrevilles Battle of Britain mod also allows air units to gain experience from bombing runs etc. Please could you tell me where to look and what, if anything needs to be changed or added?

PsiCorps, to be honest I haven't tested it - when air units come around, there usually aren't any barbs left. I was looking through the code tonight, and I'm not entirely certain that airunits gain experience just from bombing normal units. Fighting other airunits, yes, bombing, I don't know.
