Hi there.

I got Civ2:TOT about a week ago, and I patched it to v1.1.

Then I found this place....<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

I'm itching to have a shot of the GOTM, but unfortunatly I have the wrong version of Civ2.<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0>. However, a quick surf of the downloads section got me a TOT to MGE patch, so now I can have a shot of the GOTM<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/groucho-marx.gif" border=0> YAY!!!

Now, is there any more patches/bolt-ons/other stuff I should know about and download before I start some hardcore civving?

Gotta say that this is one kewl website, very helpful to us newbies<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/tongue.gif" border=0>

play some scenarios that are tough and you might lose..

Some scenarios that are winnable BUT are VERY tough...(TSFE at hard level is pointlessly tough as the allies and as germany is a drag...so isn´t there!)

1. TheRing by ChrisHutch (that´s me) available via apolyton´s database I think...searching in google finds it aswell (it is on Mr Temba´s old website)...

2. Red Front by Captain Nemo and Alex Mor

3. Civil War by Captain Nemo and Alex Mor

4. Hundred Years War by John Ellis (play as scotland for a challenge! It is cool fun!...and has the wonderful black death effect (nuke strikes without the nuke graphic or sound...just a bring out your dead sound and some terrain becoming graveyards and unproductive due to the deaths!)

5. Second Front by Captain Nemo

6. The 30 years war by some dude

If I was at home I could tell you some more that I´ve played and rated as tough but certainly playable.

LOOK AROUND!

Quistis!

Welcome to a new life!

My suggestions:

Visit the War Acadamy and read the guides.
Apolyton has some great stuff as well.

Play a level (eg: Warlord) 'til you "get it sorted" (as DCI Burnside would say) and it starts to get easy. Then move up a level.

Don't visit the Hall Of Fame - it will only depress you. It did me

Heh......I downloaded the whole of the war academy, and I usually have most of the important parts open while I play, for easy reference. It helps no end........

I'm still a bit iffy on how I should start. Once I have my first city, do I build Settlers, Warriors or Improvements first?

And after I discover Monarchy and Horseback riding, where do I direct my research? Do I aim for Republic? or aim for something else?

Quistis

p.s that's another thing I like about this site, the peeps in it are all very friendly

It depends on the level. You can generally leave cities undefended for the first 20 or 30 turns, so build a settler, then a military unit. Go in this order, spreading out and founding new cities until you meet another civ or get to about 30 turns (where there is a chance of seeing barbarians).

Also, it's very important to look in the huts. If you found a city with a hut inside the city radius, the hut WILL be good.

I used to think that the other huts would usually unleash a horde of barbarians. Since this happened to me quite a bit when I started playing

, I assumed it usually happened, but this isn't the case.

You can often get military units like archers, chariots and horsemen even if you haven't discovered the technology. Use them to explore (preferably in pairs so you can conquer an AI city if you want). I often park a unit at a key position I'll want to settle soon (or, better, patrol the local area). This keeps the AI away.
At a high level, you probably need to reverse the military/settler sequence so your cities don't go into unhappiness. You should try to get Bronze Working quickly to build the Colossus on a city site with special trade and production resources (eg. whales), so build phalanxes.
Only build temples when your cities are close to growing to a size where the next extra citizen is unhappy.

And after I discover Monarchy and Horseback riding, where do I direct my research? Do I aim for Republic? or aim for something else?
I often go hell bent for Monarchy first because of the unit support and the fact that irrigation and resources > 2 don't work in Despotism.
Bronze Working and Masonry are important so you can start on the Colussus and Pyramids. You might be able to pick them up through diplomacy or from a hut.
The main line I find useful is Polytheism -> Monotheism for two reasons:

1. I'll try to get Feudalism -> Sun Tzu's War Academy and build Elephants and Crusaders to conquer as much as possible early. Your reputation will suffer, but you won't need one if you're strong enough.

2. Get Michelangelo's Chapel. It makes a big difference to your ability to grow fast.

As far as Republic goes, use it to grow through We Love The Consul days. This will only work well when you have quite a few cities, with trade routes, so I usually leave it until I've set up a couple of trade routes from each city.
By this stage, you should have conquered most cities without walls. I don't think it's worth trying to get the ones with walls at this stage. Go to Democracy and concentrate on science and trade. You'll usually be far ahead and you can take the remaining cities when you develop cavalry or tanks. Allowing the other civs to stay mid strength means they will develop technologies you can get by trade or theft.

I think Communism or Fundamentalism is very useful for pursuing an extended war which requires a lot of production. If I have the UN and Women's Suffrage and I'm well ahead, I'll stay in Democracy for my final war of world domination before I leave 1 small AI city and build a 400 spaceship.

It is great to see a number of very interesting patches on this excellent site. It gets 11 out of 10 as far as I am concerned. It is also great to be able to contribute to the forum without any cookie problem. The Uni of Canterbury here doesn't allow cookies for some reason. This keeps me off most of the Red Baron II sites. -

The most interesting patches from my POV are the Fascist one for the industrialisation/automobile stage of the game, or any WWII scenarios, all the xtra city shapes, the 20th century units, and the 18th c units too.I think alot of city improvements such as hospitals and grain elevators have been added tooo, no doubt there are many others.

Now as to such 20th century units as the Zero fighter, or Tiger tank, are they only usable by the Japanese and German players, or can anyone use them? Does one have to be Green, or Blue?

Finally it is also great to see an additional 600 extra land tiles available. I guess such useful Bronze Age things as well... Copper and Tin might be available. Presumably also useful Industrial age things like Rubber, and Bauxite might appear. I guess the 20th century ships in the naval patch are generic in that anyone with the right tech can build a given ship. Out of interest, how does the naval mine work? Is it laid by a submarine, or a small warship?
