Any News Who Is Doing the Console Versions?

Haven't been obsessively keeping up with the news so I've may have missed it but has there been any word who is doing the various ports? Is Firaxis handling it or is it being outsourced again?

I wouldnt be surprised if they got annoyed with the outsourcing they did with Civ 6. Having to wait long periods of time before it was available on other platforms. Having to constantly read and reply to messages about it. Definitely preferable to have every version be the same no matter the platform(as much as possible anyways). Depending on the contracts, may of cost them more money too than if it was all in house.

yeah, civ6 was a bit of a test balloon to see if there is a target audience for civ on consoles. I would never play the game with a controller but I guess console players are build different. If you plan to support consoles longterm it makes sense to create an inhouse team.

Yes, Firaxis have said they're doing all versions themselves.

The controller mapping was actually pretty good. It's mostly that they went with Aspyr that made it a dumpster fire.

The console version of VI was pretty good, all told. At least in terms of the UI / button mapping for a controller. Still inferior to the PC experience, of course, but pretty intuitive. They did a decent job there imo.

Do you have a link or anything with that information?

I don't remember where I got the information, so I'm afraid "I'm 100% sure they said this" is the best I can do.

Maybe someone else remembers where they said it though.

Found it in the Nintendo Life interview with Ed Beach:

Ed Beach said:
We want everyone to have that experience right from the beginning. To do that, we needed to control how console development is done more in-house. Rather than sending something out to get ported, we're making builds on all platforms, every single day. We have lots of in-house engineering effort on all console platforms. So Switch has been very, very important to us.

Assumption is that Linux and Mac are also done in-house, but tdb. There's no mention of iOS versions (and I don't know how successful those were), so if they outsource anything it's that. It does make sense if they have the resources (which I imagine 2K has), it's going to be much easier to manage and test everything in-house combined with Aspyr's increasing delays (and acquisition).

I agree, the Switch mapping was unbelievably great. I still prefer mouse and keyboard (although I game mainly on my Steamdeck now).

I'm a lifelong civ player since Civ 1, so always played on PC. But trying out Civ 6 on Xbox was a game changer. I actually prefer playing Civ with a controller now, it's much more ergonomic. I will most likely get the PC version but still going to play with a controller, as according to the Steam page they are supported.
