Any opinions on the SMAC boardgame?

Saw one of these for sale on a private auction site, it's rather pricey so I'm wondering if anyone has played a copy and whether it's a decent board game.

I don't recall seeing this game, and I've certainly never played it. However, after snooping around, I found this page. It seems to refer to the same game as depicted in your post.

where the heck did you find this? I can't seem to locate anything about it except that site Petek linked, or anyone selling it. I'd be interested in taking a look at this if only there was someone selling.

Indeed, sounds a like great game. At least the rules presented at the page seem pretty complete, so in theory you can put it together yourself.
