Anybody else going to miss Art Deco?

But the new main menu is creepy:

Who is this weird guy, btw?

Francis I of France. He fought against Charles V and Henry VIII, he allied with Suleiman the Magnificent. He led France to join in the wars in Italy. He was a patron of the arts. Overall, he was a pretty important French King.

Thank you. So he's there because of the Renaissance scenario... I would prefer David to replace the Atlas, but still, I guess it's easy to fix that.

David would have been a cool choice. However, Francis looks very pious in that picture, which helps.

This makes me wonder if they are going use fully animated leaderheads for the Medieval scenario

90% positive they are, same with using it for the fall or Rome.

The only exception is the Smoky Sky Scenario.

There's a very easy reason Isabella is included, not just in the scenario, had it been not important she would've been a static painting and very much likely not included for free.

Well, the Spanish are being included, so that includes both of their UU, so that's another reason to include them even with a static leaderhead.

Maria Theresa and Catherine are a bit late time-wise, but only Napoleon would be completely out of place. So if they did have a fully animated Francis, that would make sense. It would likely require a new voice actor. All of this does seem a bit of work, but if all other civs are exactly the same, it would make sense. Alternatively, I could still see static leaders even if they rendered Francis for the intro screen. The point is they won't just use Napoleon.

They used Napoleon as Francis I in the New World Scenario nothing stopping them.. they re-used plenty of leaders.

Hiawatha, Kamehameha, Montezuma and Gandhi in the Polynesian Scneario

Alexander, Harun, Suleiman, Darius and Ramesses for the Ancient World scenario

Wu, Oda, Sejong and Genghis for the Korean Scenario..

Why would they have an entire Francis leader on the title screen, though?

Why would they have an entire Francis leader on the title screen, though?

Well, hard to say, but not once have I ever seen a brand new unique animated leader screen for any of the scenarios.

Either way, I'll admit, it's just way too close, but watchu gonna do about it? It's not like the Main Menu is ever popular in Civ 5.

Vanilla has the most horrid main menu theme, and the expansion has the worst background

Quite frankly I really liked the art deco look, but it didn't quite click with me in vanilla. It's beautiful, crisp and clean, but I don't want beautiful, crisp and clean when its 3000BC, I want it to be like that when I have an actual advanced civilization on my hands. I would have preferred if the UI reskinned itself every couple of eras, much like the advisers seem to in G+K.

On a side note, the vanilla V menu screen was by no means the pretties of them all, a significant step back from the beauty that was 4 in fact, but the one in G+K is just absolutely dreadful! It looks like some badly designed mod, I hate it.

The game played well, but the intro video had problems for me last night--it was all in negative and unwatchable. A video card issue, I guess. Not that it's a huge deal, but I'd like to see it at least once before I start clicking through it every time. :D

Now that Gods and Kings has been released, can somebody tell me if we can change the interface back?

If anything the change in art style around the UI elements is more pronouced then in the early screenshots (the wrought iron bits around windows and UI elements are now a different color then the old smooth stone work art deco stuff).

One thing I noticed but can't be 100% sure wasn't in Vanilla is on the tech tree - every tech now has a subtle animation. You don't even see it at first but researched techs for instance have the light source slowly move, blue stuff you are researching now has the bubbles animated. Like I said it's subtle enough not to be garnish or annoying so I might have somehow missed it for more then a year.

All that being said I don't find the new style to be bad, just different. I haven't encountered anything yet that actually distracts from the game. Given the option I think I would switch back but asking for that option is definitely at the bottom of my wish list, it just isn't that big of a deal.

I would vote for an UI style that changes with each era, from stone to space age.

That was my plan but since the current Firaxis code won't give us & any modders access to key assets and specific resources either through some Front-End custom function or DLL tackling... looks like we'll have to find workaround solutions - G&K DLC-Type switch hints on allocated memory stack i could certainly use to design era driven interfaces.
