Anyone else find the late game less pleasing than the start?

I find myself rarely able to completely finish a campaign, much less conquer the whole map.
It just becomes too tedious and repetitive in the late game imo.
It becomes siege after siege. The egyptians end up taking over the whole middle east, while blue rome is cowering away in north africa and is having little skirmishes with egypt along their border. Germans/dacians/scythians are weak as all hell (if they are even still alive) their towns are still all small with barely any garrisons in them.
Rebel and brigand armies are spawning everywhere and I'm reluctant to waste time battling them, and auto resolve sacrifices way too many of my own units.
All that there is left to do is create buildings and units (which is a very long and frustrating process when you have abunch of cities) and then if you aren't playing as Romans transporting units to where you need them takes so much time.

Just a couple rants I had to get off my chest, even though I can't stop playing:p :p

Standard strategy game phenomena. It happens in most turn-based games, including Civ. You just reach a point when you realise you are invincible, and there's no reason to continue except to see what happens :)

Depends on how interested I am in my current game, but usually I play it as long as possible. The only problem is if I take a break for a few days, as I'm suddenly overwhelmed with a large empire when I come back. As such, I start a new game.

Some games - such as Civ - I actually prefer the start-game than running a large empire.

late game i just decide to pump out units in cities with the most advanced soldiers and just beat the crap out of everybody else.

heck at that point i dont bother updating my cities

Although the late game is boring, I find it fun bombarding fortresses w/ newly discovered gunpowder in M2:TW(especially with the great bombard). That's the only thing that makes me play long games

Too bad there isn't some kind of option like in civ where you can raze the city :(

DAMNIT I just saved over my roman campaign :( I had most of italy, half of Carthage's African holdings and was advancing into Gaul.

it also has a nice huge map...

Also, if you can get Falxmen, get them. They are death to roman troops.

EDIT: I remember why I havn't played the risk one yet, I hate having the romans split into different factions.

Mine (version 8.1) has two Risk maps that are identical except that one has the romans split and one has them united. I too prefer them united, although having a Roman civil war is accurrate and fun. The main incentive of having them united is to free three slots for other factions to be in the game instead.

Yeah I started that risk_Ur map as Gaul. I took Rome at around 10 turns.

I havn't actualy fought a united Rome yet besides this recent campaign, I think the dofficulty for thr risk map will have to be higher next time. They were not prepared.
