Anyone got Better AI working in Linux?

Vanilla Civ works flawlessly, after I add Blue Marble and latest BUG (tried adding it to Custom Assets and as a MOD) there are still no problems at all. After i install Better AI it just freezes at start with init error. Is there some logging I can enable perhaps?

I know Linux is not a priority but I would really love to play this even on Linux.

I'm not sure Better AI works with vanilla Civ at all. I think "Better AI" is the short form of the full name "Better BTS AI". Happy to be proved wrong, though.
 
Thats right, I have BTS as well. Just Civ 4 and BTS (don't have Warlords)
 
I've tried some different things, I tried running just BetterAI, and it is the same problem, it reports Shader libraries error and that is solved by having 2 DirectX files in your system32 folder or your Civ/BTS folder. I have those files. If I delete BetterAi everything works so files are there, everything I can think of is perhaps some discrepancy in folder names somewhere perhaps as Linux is case sensitive. If there is anything else I can check for your please let me know.

I notice from your logs that it says that it isn't loading a mod. So that makes me think you didn't install it into a mod. Which leaves multiple different possible places where you could have installed it.

BUG -- that is a no-DLL mod right? Did you install it as a mod? In assets? In custom assets?

Did you try BULL? Have you gotten any DLL based mod to work?

What is the path where your "vanilla BTS" DLL is located on your system? (as a sanity check)

I haven't ran windows binaries on linux personally. Probably should learn. But are there tools that can tell you what the dependencies of a given windows DLL is as far as linux is concerned? Or tools that describe in detail what other DLLs are loaded during the linux running of a DLL? (there are such tools for native linux binaries and for native windows binaries)

I'm gonna try and do my best to answer all of those:

1.
DX files required according to WineHQ AppDB are installed in Windows/system32 folder.

2. I have tried installing just Better AI both ways recommended in the readme. As a mod and with replacing default files. I have also tried installing Better AI with BUG but no luck.
Installed BUG to Custom Assets and as a Standalone MOD and followed this post
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=296534 for both installs still no go.

3. Hmmm haven't tried BULL, what is that? I would gladly try it as long as I get benefits of Better AI

If I install BTS with latest patch it works... no problems. If I install FFH or BUG I need to change a command option to get them to work

The only difference is if there is a mod enabled or not.

So BTS 3.19 works flawlessly, I install a mod to "mods" folder. Now mods work without a problem, but "vanilla" BTS won't

I've followed AppDB instructions to a letter. I have no idea what is going on. It must be something stupid like some / or \ out of place but I just can't see it :(



In any case, Civ is complaining about shaders, I think it says "error loading shader libraries". As I can get a game working I don't think that is true. Must be some obscure bug.
I don't know if Fall from heaven is dll mod but it runs fine without a hitch but it broke my "vanilla" BTS. Insane

What version of Civ4 BTS better AI are you running? (or trying to)

Are you certain about both of the above answers? How did you determine it?

BULL is a BUG with a DLL to make it go faster mod. I was wondering if you got _any_ mods with DLLs running, or if the problem was BetterAI specific. Trying other DLL-including mods might help lots.

You really need to be more clear. What do you mean "now my vanilla BTS won't work".

And saying "I followed directions from X" is a bad way to describe it. Copy/paste the directions you followed, and put it into a spoiler. Then make sure you actually followed each and every step in those directions. While you are at it, repeat the process while looking at the directions, and make sure you included _everything_ you did in a step-by-step manner.

The only difference is if there is a mod enabled or not.
There are at least 4 ways to "enable a mod" under Civ 4 BTS. Saying "the mod is enabled" doesn't describe which of the 4 ways you "enabled the mod".
So BTS 3.19 works flawlessly, I install a mod to "mods" folder. Now mods work without a problem, but "vanilla" BTS won't

You said that mods didn't work, and now they do work? And you said that standard BTS worked, but now it doesn't?

When describing technical problems over the internet, you have to be extremely clear and pedantic about what you are doing, unless you get lucky and run into someone who has already solved your problem exactly and can read between the lines.

Start with a bare installation of BTS. Update it to the most recent version.

Record each and every step you do in installing it.

Get as many log files as you can. Does it work?

Now install the Better AI mod into a mod directory.

Launch the game. Select load a mod -- Better AI. What happens? What do the logs say?

Try setting up a shortcut that directly loads Better AI. What happens? What do the logs say?

Change a / to a \ in the shortcut you write. What happens? What do the logs say?

Yes, this is pedantic. But you are asking for tech support over an internet forum, and the person at the other end hasn't had your problem (if anyone here has actually seen the posters problem, and knows a solution, please do chime in -- I'm probing around in the dark here!)

Do the above for yet another mod. Always install everything as a mod if you can in order to make things sane and keep your 'main install' as pristine as possible. Can you get any mods to work at all? What mods can you get to work and which can you not?

I really don't understand how changing a the command-line option to launch FFH caused the standard BTS to not work. I am not even sure if that is what you are describing as happened!
 
Darn, I have to leave in about 3 hours and won't be able to test anything (getting married abroad in two weeks). I just re read what I've wrote and it really doesn't make much sense but thats what happens when you have to little sleep.

I'll be away for a month and than we can try again with some better logs from me.

Your best bet is to run it as a mod, if this works fine you know it's a problem with the install, if it does not work, you know there's a problem somewere else
