Anyone likes "Strength"?

Wow, seems that everyone likes Strength!
Maybe if I'm going to play it I'm going to like it. Anyway, when I started this thread I didn't think of the bonus of some units against another ones. Maybe the new system is better!

I don't think it is strength per se we all like, it is all of the other features they have put in, along with strength, in CIV IV. Its just a better combat system (many of us think).

QFT! In the previous CIV's i never brought along siege weapons are even in later combat, i never used combined arms (Air, land, and sea) I feel to truly rule in CIV4 combat combined arms are a must.

Civ 3

Defense:

Spearman - Pikeman - Musketman - Rifleman - Infantry - Mech Infantry

Offense (only depending slightly on current techs):

Archer - Swordsman (Primary) and Horseman (for fast attack) - Medieval Inf (until Knight is available) - Knight - Cavalry - Tank - Modern Armor

I rarely built Catapults and only had a few Cannons but by the time Artillery came around, they made taking and defending cities much easier.

Useless units:

Chariot - Wheeled so can't go into jungle or mountain squares plus horseman come too quickly
Longbowman - Medieval Inf come first and are stronger so a completely pointless unit
Marine and Paratrooper - Too weak to be able to do enough damage to Infantry unless you have loads of them.

This is of course based off of my experience and opinion.

Civ 4 (I'm not able to play much so I've only just made it to the Industrial Era so I can't comment on anything more advanced than Cavalry and Riflemen

Defense:

Archer (general defense) and Spearman (mounted defense) - Longbowman (general defense) and Pikeman (mounted defense) - Musketman - Rifleman (general defense) and Grenadier (def vs Rifleman)

Offense:

All units except Archers, Longbowmen and Musketmen. Every other unit listed fills some kind of off roll.

Useless units:

Crossbowmen - Swordsmen fill their roll until CBs become available and Macemen come too quickly afterward to really build any.

Again, this is based off of my experience and opinion.

In Civ 3, you had your single defensive and offensive units for each stage of the game and others weren't really necessary.

In Civ 4, almost every unit fills some kind of roll in the game and is used for either offense or defense or both.

Promotions allow for more diversity within each type of unit. For example, with artillery units, I have a few that have Bombard I and Accuracy and the rest have Bombard II. I always build Barracks before building units and as soon as I research the necessary techs, I adopt Vassalage and Theocracy giving my units 8 instant xp. I only use the units with Accuracy to bombard city defenses and then send in the units with Bombard II to soften up the defenders.

Civ 3 there was basically only one way to use units but Civ 4 allows such a huge ammount of divrsity that each person can have their own play style.

I largely agree with what you are saying, Ranos, but you also need to consider one HUGE wildcard-Promotions. It is probably this which helps make Strength so much more flexible than the old AS/DS system.
For instance, YES I normally use archers as defenders, but I have also promoted some archers and longbowmen to be especially good against melee units, whilst some have the woodsmen promotion-these LBM and archers certainly do NOT get used merely in defense, but are often used as a backbone of my offensive units-even if just to 'thin out the ranks' of my enemy a bit. Obviously, if an archer is staying behind, then I make certain to give them the City Defender promotion!
Oh, and I don't find Crossbows useless, as their 'first strike' ability makes them quite powerful.

I very often use longbows and archers AND muskets for offense. Spearmen and pikemen are good offense against mounted units too. I never take a city in the industrial/modern era without a healthy dose of riflemen/infantry

And that's the beauty of the new combat system.. Most Units fill both roles, offense and defense

Useless units:

Crossbowmen - Swordsmen fill their roll until CBs become available and Macemen come too quickly afterward to really build any.

Well Macemen don't always come quickly - it depends on your build order.

OTOH, if you've got loads of archers from the ancient age and need major defense against your enemy's macemen/swordsmen/other melee units, then ugprade them to crossbowmen!

In Civ 4, almost every unit fills some kind of roll in the game and is used for either offense or defense or both.

exactly!
