I've played BTS a lot, and I've been trying for a religious victory w/ no success. Voting for religious victory (only the voting for the resident) never comes up unless another civ has the religion as it's state religion. The AI seems to know it and will wait to convert to apostlic palace religion until they can prevent my victory. And then even though I may have them at +5 pleased or friendly they will abstain.

This is the only victory that has eluded me. Any thoughts I would appeciate. I've come within 2 votes of winning one time and a few other times at 5 votes or less.

Is there a cool video if you win religious victory?

To make the Apostolic Palace diplo victory vote available, every civ must have the AP religion in at least 1 of its cities AND you cannot have enough votes to vote yourself the winner solo.
The candidates for the AP victory are the AP owner (not always voted resident) and the civ with the highest population of the AP religion type while having it as state religion.
It's possible to make yourself the only canddiate for the victory, just build the AP in a religion noone is using! You don't even need to stay in this religion after. Spread the AP religion to a decent number of your friends cities, and just one city of the people who don't like you.

Some leaders may be difficult to get the AP religion into due to closed borders or them running the Theocracy Civic. For these awkward people, settle a new city next to them, spread the AP religion to it, then liberate or gift the city to the problem AI. This also gives +diplo points :D

AIs prefer to convert to religions they found, or the religion in the most of they're cities. Don't spread it to every city and you'll be fine.

At pleased leaders won't vote you the winner, friendly civs will vote for you unless
They are a vassal of the other candidate (vassals always vote for master unless they are a candiddate themselves)
OR
Are the other candidate

Same as UN video if I remember correctly :(

I've had a couple - think 2 in total. One was in a forum game where I was messing around a bit with using only espionage to tech. Ghpstage gave the mechanics, but the main key is either diplomacy or vassals to get you enough votes. Funny that in a game where I stole all my techs from others, I managed good enough diplo to also get the other civs to vote for me.

For getting all the key diplo bonuses from the other civs, use favorite civics, shared religion, gifting resources and giving in to demands of other big civs that won't be in the vote. Here's the link to the game I won with the AP.

One trick I think people use is if you bulb theology with a prophet and gift it to a smaller or less liked civ, you can then make sure your opponent in the vote is weak, and can focus on diplo with some of the larger civs. I'm not the expert at those types of victories though.

I never try for this victory, but I managed to win a victory of this type once, and it was completely unintentional on my part. I was spreading my religeon to make more money so I can expand faster, at least 2 other civ's adopted my religeon if I remember right. All of a sudden, it popped up asking what to put to a vote, and religous victory was an option. I selected it and a bunch of civ's all voted for me which was odd because I really wasn't trying to be all that nice to them. Just like that I won.

If the world has an Island or Ice section big enough for 2 cities - winning this way is extremely easy. All you need to do is build 2 cities on the island or ice, spread the religion to one of the cities and then create a colony from them using the F1 key and Fist icon on the bottom right of that window. This new colony is now your vassal and will vote for your Religious Victory. Really, really, simple... broken I'd say...

i think in "Attacko's Missionary Blitzkrieg" there was a religious victory

Saladin, hinduism, missonaries and a thousand screaming camel archers.

Im sure the links above have a more detailed explanation, but I'll describe the genereal method below.

1) Make AP in a religion that neither you, or anyone else, uses.
2) Spread the religion to 1 city for every player.
3) Get the following vote distribution:
You: between 50 and 75%
Your best friend: enough to put you over 75%
Someone else: More votes than your best friend (so they are the other candidate, not you friend)
Alternatively, 'someone else' can be an unliked civ that owns the AP but has few votes.
4) Make sure 'your best friend' is at friendly, and likes you more than 'someone else'.

edit: votes are distributed 1 point per population living in a city with that religion. Double votes if the religion is the state religion. The convert religion option for spies can help fix things correctly.

Unnecessary. Your friend will not be a candidate regardless because he is not in the AP religion. The only option will be you, and your friend will vote for you.

I won a strange AP victory today. I held the residency, but the AP city kept changing hands in a series of fluid wars that I wasn't involved in. As was stated before, a vassal will always vote for the master, but not neccesarily the other way around.

In this instance, a heathen vassal of a friendly brother of the faith had captured the AP city. When the vote came up, the friendly master voted for me, as did his other vassal who was friendly. Everyone one else abstained but I had enough votes to clear the threshhold.

The other alternative is to get a vassal so they have no choice but to vote for you (and spread your state religion to his cities).

The key is missionaries--get them out quickly, and try to prvent other guys from becoming theocracies if at all possible with bribes.

You can also force vassals out of the AP religion so they're not candidates.

Theocracies aren't a problem...just gift the AI the missionary and it will spread it for you . Or if you don't like that use spies to flip them into OR or FR or whatever.

Usually if you build the AP though you can win as long as you don't get killed by a DoW too fast. No vassals required...just run the religion/favorite civic of one AI, spread the religion to him like crazy, then spread 1 to each remaining AI. Victory.
