Anyone remember the game empire? It was a kick ass turn based strtegy, pretty basic - came out years and years ago - killed alot of time with that one -
or better yet anyone know where i can get a copy of it?

i can't believe that none of you remeber "empire" or "empire deluxe" - of maybe am I showing my age? the game is probably 10 years old by now

Not only do I still have the game, I still occasionally play the game. It kicked butt.

I know what you're saying. Nice that it had adjustable difficulties down to a percentage!
Hit points, movement points, air, land, sea. It had it all. Well, not everything. But still great! :king:

Never played that game before, how does it play? Is it more like Civ or a wargame?

It been a long time but,

You have cities that can build armies, planes, and a variety of military units. I think each city had different production efficiencies. Anyway, you built up armies and took over more cities, all the whill the other two computer players were doing the same. IIRC, naval units had hit points too. It was a classic empire building game. I guess you would say it was more like CIV than a wargame in the sense that the units were generic, and that cities built the units.

It did have the potential to be tedious though. I remember marching about 50-60 armies through central america to attack the enemy in South America. There was an auto move function, but the journey was something like 100 moves for each unit.

Oh yes, I remember empire. Just build armies, that was the ticket. The Queen of Battle & all that.

I still think that it may have inspired the Sid's civ series.

I'm sure if you search you'll find it. But cg's have come a long ways since then. You may find it a bit disappointing now. A year or so ago I found a copy of moria while on a nostalgia kick. Played it for a day, then blew it off the hd. Too much time has passed...

Cheers,

IIRC, the map was filled with just cities which started neutral & when you took them over, you could make units out of them. Any coastal cities could also make navy units. Better units just took longer to make but I think all were available from the start.

It was pretty tedious to have a large army by the end. But, there were some handy features, like patrol, sentry, and escort. Also, units slowed down when they were damaged. Pretty amazing for an ancient game. You could also set the combat win % and production bonus % for every player for when you got better.

Maybe I'll load it up when I get a chance. I think I might have it on an emulator somewhere.

The grandaddy of all the current strategy games is the DOS based, text only, 100K size "Empire", circa 1982. You needed to have an ANSI driver loaded to position the text cursor properly. The keyboard placement of commands was a little unusual, and there were no sound effects.

Letters and puncutation represented the various units and terrain, e.g., oceans were periods (.). All maps were random, and there were no scenarios.

The enemy was lowercase, and you were uppercase.... only 2 sides to the war. You could not stack units, and there was no terrain types other than land and water.

The AI was pretty darned good, but then again the game was simple too.

Empire inspired the Civ I team.... all of Civ is based on an extension and vast improvement of Empire.

I have a copy of it somewhere, and even way back when, there was no restrictions on distributing it. I can find it if someone is really intersted... it was a great game, considering 256 K Ram, and 4.77 MHz PC's with Hercules graphics cards at best.

PS, The game may be a little complex for people today, LOL! Actaully, it had quite a list of rules and details to it.

:)

I'm really glad I stumbled on this thread. I played the game years ago and couldn't think of the name...it was driving me nuts!!! I think it was a big inspiration for the civ series. I played it on an Apple IIgs with 512k of RAM.
