I wanted to know because I'm wondering if its worth the buy on the DS. I understand it wont be as deep as the PC's CIV BTS, or the 360//PS3 Civ REV. I just hope its not completely watered down that its just, build a city, build building and units and kill.

Any reviews would be appreciated, thanks!

I've been playing the DS GotW for a few weeks now, and I must say that it is a bit shallow playing against the AI. The AI on the DS is pretty poor, so much so that I can win on Deity with little effort. If this is any indication of my playing ability, I usually play on Prince in BTS with minor challenge.

I haven't tried playing it multiplayer, that is where you might find some real entertainment. Considering all the elements of a decent strategy game are there, just lacking proper AI players. If that's what you interested in, then I might suggest it.

Anyway... those are my thoughts on it. It's definitely entertaining for a couple weeks regardless of the AI.

Hope that helps,

- John

Civ Rev on the DS is not really watered down. Basically all the eye candy is missing (animations, sound, etc.), but the game is essentially the same: all the civs, all the techs, all the units, same map size, etc.
My wife likes it a lot :)

I played it once and it was pretty lame. The features are the same, the techs, the units everything, its just 3d graphics give a better sense of fun. It's the equavalent of an advanced game of risk to be really honest.

I like it on the DS. I play both the 360 and DS versions. If I had to pick one, of course I'd pick the 360 version because of the great animations, civilopedia, and ease of checking unit stats. The DS version gets the job done, though, and I prefer it to other strategy games like Advance Wars.

I haven't noticed any gameplay differences on the DS compared to the 360 version. I think it works really well as a handheld.

I borrowed my neighbor's kid's DS to try it out.

At first, I thought it was completely lame. The graphics are horrible! They remind me of Civ I where it was difficult to tell whether it was a settler or a tree.

However, before I knew it, the time had flown by. I was almost done with my game, but needed to return it before the bus brought the kids home.

Basically, I think it's best for when you can't play on the 360 - like road trips, flying, or avoiding your in-laws (hey, now I understand why the movie theaters are so booked up on the day after Christmas).

I'm hoping for one for my birthday, so I guess that's a positive endorsement.

It's great for me because I take public transportation, so a few turns here and there makes the ride go much faster.

throw the stylus away...troop movement & city management are much faster w/ the buttons.

I use stylus to manage cities; everything else I use buttons.

I've only played the DS version and am considering the PS3 version. Is the AI a lot smarter in the PS3 version?

What's MP?

Edit: Oh, multiplayer. The DS has a Nintendo wifi option though. Haven't tried it yet.

It's the same game only uglier. I love it for when I'm out. My job is a lot of sit around and wait, so it really helps.

I enjoy playing it on the DS, but I don't have a 360 or ps3 to compare it to.

It's currently the only game I'm playing and I can't stop playing it.

There are some annoying things though. Hopefully I'm just clueless about these things and someone can point me in the right direction to how I'm doing it wrong:

  • I haven't memorized all the stats of the units, so when choosing to build, it either tells me a little generic info piece on them, or the stats. I have to select another unit and go back to the first unit until it randomly decides to tell me its stats.
  • If an enemy unit is attacking me from above a city, it's health bar is covered by the city, so I can't immediately tell if it's an army or a lone fighter
  • Sometimes I want to set the city to ALL science, or ALL gold, but I can't figure out a way to do that easily. If I select the presets, it still will choose a production or food unit as well. So I go into customize, and do it manually, but then I look and it has chosen science when I wanted gold. So I go back, hit the gold button, and then go back into customize.
  • Sometimes it messes up customization altogether. I wanted to set a city to all gold, but a lone villager refuses to be placed and is on production. So I go into the customization, and the lone villager is 'placed' but he's not there to be unplaced. No manner of clicking the presets brings him back. I eventually just waited for the city to grow and gave up on it.
  • I am not used to leaders enough to know which ones are science/cultural/engineering/etc. So if a leader pops up, and I want to settle in a city, it would be nice to have a button to show a list of leaders in the city. Yes, the side does show the leaders, but you can't select them, so unless you know by its icon, it's hard to remember what it does.
  • I'd like to choose my own colour
  • If I have a stack of units, and ONE of them is the general, I wish I could select the general and thus select the unit it's attached to. I may want to bring the general somewhere else that needs it more, but if I have a horde of units, I have to move each one until I can find it.
  • I would like to select a tech in the tech planner, and it puts the techs in queue.
  • I'd like to move a stack of units, instead of individually
  • In the endgame, I wish it would stop telling me how I could win (either by culture or tech) every turn if only I would build a wonder.

I know that's a big list of complaints and I have more if I think about it, but I do love playing the game.

I do want to try it multiplayer one of these days.

Also, are strats similar? I'm assuming most strategy posted in these forums are for the non-DS versions, but are they easily translatable?

Oh, and I don't mind ugly. I play a lot of abandonware. :)

Hi Errol!

I've been playing on the 360 and just recently bought a DS just to play Civ while travelling. I'm actually waiting for a piece to come in so I can play it, then I will go and get my drivers license pic redone so I can play while I wait....and wait....and wait.

So to answer some of your questions (skipped ones that had no question):
1. Same as 360, you just need to memorize
3. Make sure you have already switched your city to either gold or science before you manage workers. Otherwise, it may not work the way you want.
5. That's a bummer. Guess I'll be dealing with that soon enough too.
7. I think you can, but I can't say more until I can play it myself.
8. Interesting.... I haven't figured out yet (or if it's possible) to put techs in queue on the 360, so if you can do that on the DS, that's cool!
9. No can do - on any platform of the game.
10. Yes, everyone has that complaint - we all want it to stop. But I figure, hey, I could someday be in a game where I'll actually want that info (although doubtful).

I can't wait to play it in multiplayer too, but I don't know anyone over age 9 with a DS who can play Civ.

Allo Debbie!

I don't think you can put techs in a queue. But I'm getting used to which techs I want, as well as stats. I still foget which leaders are where, but I'm getting better at that.

I don't know if you can delete units on the DS version, at least I can't find it. There are times I want to delete some units and get gold, but no can do.

I also like how in previous versions of civ, you can set production to go straight to gold.

You don't know anyone over the age of 9 with a DS? Wow, I must hang out with more geeks. *laugh*

I could play multiplayer with you, but you'd trash me. :) And my free times are a bit hard to organize... I have little ones that run around and scream and avoid me when I try to beat them. Rotten kids. :D

Hey Errol!

Well, unless you live near me in NC, we couldn't play multi-player anyway (to my knowledge).

And yes, I have a lot of geek friends but since they are all chicks (and I'm a chick too), they all have the latest iPhone, no game playing devices. But they all live in CA anyway, so I couldn't mp with them either.

Hopefully, one day we'll buy a DS for our son, and then my hubby can play against me in Civ. And since he just started playing Civ (and I have 18 years on him playing it), I would whoop his butt! At least until he learns more about it, then he'll whoop me.

DS has the ability to connect through WiFi, actually. Haven't tried it though. :) I mostly just convene with my geek friends and we play DS.

However, they don't have Civ yet. I don't know if they'll get it either.

How old is your son? My wife has a DS, but she likes puzzle games. My daughters like to watch me play Rune Factory (Fantasy Harvest Moon) and then they want to play so I make them clear fields.... Ekko is the oldest almost 7 years old. Zoe is four this monday...
