We're getting a high-speed connection, but while it's getting set up, our normal internet connection doesn't work, so we have to use one of those AOL (german version) CD's with 150 hours of free test time, and it's the worst browser I've ever been unfortunate enough to use! I hope we'll get our new connection soon. I won't survive longer than two weeks with this.
Have any of you had any bad experiences with AOL?

No, never.

I heard they were "nanny" ISPs and steered well clear of them from the start.

Don't believe the hype.

I thought everyone knew AOL was crap... :dubious:

AOL friggin sucks, and you realize how truly pointless it is to pay $23 a month when you can get DSL for 4 more bucks. So DSL is like 20% more expensive, but its like 25 times faster, it doesn't take your phone line.

If you really want dial-up get something like Walmart.connect or any of the $10 a month ones. All the extra features AOL boasts having you can get free (pop-up blocking, spam protection) so never give in to the dark side (AOL).

I use AOl and hate it. The browser sucks. Minimize one window to get to another window. It's very poorly desghined.

Luckily they don't exist in Norway. (But who knows if they don't come here sometime in the future...)

Yep. Next thing you know you will be bombared with commercials for a new ISP called NOL (Norway OnLine)

The worst thing about AOL (at least the german version of it) is that they charge you per minute, and you can't log out without having to close the browser, so even when you're reading a long document you have to be connected all the time.

@oagersnap: AOL was designed like that back when unlimited usage plans weren't so common, it is widely believed that this was done to force people to use more of their minutes and exceed their limit $$$$

I used AOL back when they only had 28.8 they frequently kicked us off the internet for things like being idle for 40 seconds. It was pointless to get on during 6-9pm because you had to have the patience of a saint to try and connect because it failed 10 times. My mom was always annoyed because it was dial up and she couldn't use the phone. If I ever have to go back to those days I'll just give up using computers.

Mmmm, yes, I have had a hellish experience with AOL.

My mom joined in 1998 or so, with the release of AOL 3.0. We finally quit around March 2003, months before the release of AOL 9.0. We watched the prices rise from 419.95 to $21.95 to $23.95. We watched the subscription free trials rise from 100 hours to 250 to 300 to 500 to 100 to 1020 to 1045 to...what is it now?

For the most part, my experience was satisfactory. I spent most of my time on AOL Kids (I was 10 when my mom first joined, remember), chatting, and canvassing AOL message boards. My mom installed severe online timers, email restrictions (only whitelisted people could email me and no attachments), and Parental Controls. I didn't mind that much: I hadn't yet gotten a real game (such as Civ3 that brought me to these boards), discovered GameFAQs (I spend most of my time there now), or registered for Yahoo Mail.

The problems arose when we attempted to cancel in December 2002. My mom tried to cancel at 10PM Pacific the day before the billing cycle, but they said that because AOL ran on Eastern time, it was too late and we'd be billed for another whole month. My mom hung up and called again and we got three free months. But then they charged us for Feburary despite their promises not to charge us. My mom complained, but Discover sided with AOL.

We finally got off two months later on EarthLink. We then switched to Verizon and have never looked back since.

I have not used AOL in eons. The only thing I use from AOL is their IM system and thats it.

AOL is a redundant piece of garbage. They need to come up with some new products while they still have the money for R&D and they should probably do it under one of the good names that they bought like winamp or icq etc.

The last thing AOL needs is more trash to put on people's computers.

If AOL were smarter, theyed make a better uninstaller, and remove all the bloatware that their slimy little tentacles infect.

Amen to the better installer. I hate AOL. I could not get the thing to uninstall on three computers - I've had to delete the folder, which causes a lot of registery errors and other problems.
