Approval Rating; How does it work?

I cannot figure out how it works. In the next patch they're just going to have a tab in the diplomacy screen that will tell how much a specific leader likes or dislikes you.

But right now all I have is my approval rating to go by. I always start at about 75%. Then it goes down dramatically no matter if I'm a warmonger or a diplomat. By the end of the game It's like 30%.

Does anyone know how it's calculated, or why it goes down? How to keep a steady high number?

I think allying city-states helps, but do not know for sure

The Demographics "Approval Rating" has nothing to do with diplomacy; it's strictly a measure of your Empire's Happiness Level. The base Approval Rating (Happiness Level of 0) is 60%; any Happiness surplus (or deficit) is multiplied by 3 and added to the base so a +10 Happy empire will be at 90% approval and a -10 Happy empire will be at 30% approval.

Oh boy do I feel stupid. I for some reason assumed that it had to do with the other leaders disposition towards me. That makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

Why should you feel stupid? I bet a lot of people thought the same... I did also... It does not say DOMESTIC approval or something... Besides... who has the time to read manuals when you can read the forums at work :P
