If not, what's their typical use-case then? Are they strong/weak?

P.S. Don't give answers like "depending on the situation" without actually describing the situation you're talking about. Thank you!

My understanding is coursers were added to plug a hole in the light cav path. Why they were given precisely 44 strength over some other number is anyone’s guess.

But coursers are there for when you make a classical push with horsemen, to sustain your momentum. Not only because they directly upgrade, but also because coursers use horses, where knights use iron. (Cavalry also use horses.) So there is also the resource side: it’s common to have horses and get hosed on iron. People on this forum are very susceptible to ignoring resource costs when discussing things.

The light cav path is useful for a number of reasons, but in the current state of the game you need to have different types of units to support each other. Once they have the 1 MP to pillage promotion they can win a lot of prizes, and heal damage. Their mobility also makes them great for providing flanking/support bonuses to other troops. They can always prosecute a siege but as has been mentioned they're bad at dealing with walls. Granted, Coursers CAN brute their way through Ancient Walls even without a battering ram, but the fact that they can't benefit from Siege Towers means that you need another answer for anything stronger than that. If you don't have iron but do have horses (which happens frequently) it certainly makes sense to prioritize them if you want to make war but they aren't the right tool for every job.

Pushing with this is seldom a wise option, since it comes at the time when you face walled cities with crossbows.

However it does provide better mobility and much better survival chance than horseman under the attack of walls and crossbows, so a good unit for pillaging.

I guess even with Hungary this is sth. with second priority. The first priorty shall be muskets.

As @Lily_Lancer says but on lower level and even sometimes on deity civs can be slow to put up walls so you can use them but they get damaged quick. Of course you may have Horsemen from an initial attack left around and pillaging is not only a strong part of the game but is what these are designed for as well as taking out those Nasty catapults that the AI now uses in numbers.
Combination armies do feel more real

Ok then, thanks everyone for replies!

@Sostratus, speaking of courser's strength of 44, I believe this is made so to be just enough to withstand hits of swordsmen comfortably and be durable against crossbowmen to some extent. They're still vulnerable to pikemen which is how things should be. Why not 45 or 43? I dunno :)
