Wondering if there are any others out there like myself. I'm a much better Civ3 player than I was a Civ2 player. I think it has a lot to do w/ sites like CFC. I never surfed the web for strategies/techniques for Civ2 like I did for Civ3. The hardest level I won in Civ2 was Prince, in Civ3 its Emperor.

What's been your experience and why?

Well damn, I meant for this to go in the general section.

Edit

I reposted it in the general section. I guess we can have a mac perspective and a general perspective.

So far I think with each version of Civ I get worse at the game. I was much better at Civ I than at civII because I was in college and my friends and I played all the time. I really loved CivII and played quite a bit but I never had the advantage of comparing notes with other players to get better at the game. So I was much worse at CivII than at Civ I. I still havent played Civ III much, when I first got the game I played a few times and then wiped it off my hard drive to save space and then moved on to other games. The GOTM has really rejuvinated my Civ playing and I agree with you dojoboy now that I have found this site I have a feeling I will eventually get much better at Civ III than at Civ II. Right now I am just begining to be able to win at CivIII monarch level. Hopefully by playing some more GOTMs and reading all of the tips here I can get up to higher levels.

Although I think each version of Civ has gotten a little harder as well, dont you guys? definitely better AI. and more choices for the player to make which can go wrong.

i was better at Civ2 than Civ3, on Civ2 i usually played at Deity, now i'm down to Emperor in Civ3.

what makes it harder? ai civs trade tech around better, it's a lot more expensive to steal a new tech in civ3, which i used to do all the time in civ2 but never now. also, i think the ai gets off to a lot better start in civ3.

I think I am better at Civ2 than Civ3 for a couple of reasons. First, between the two games I played quite a bit of Alpha Centauri. In learning to play that game, I read the extensive strategy guides published at the Apolyton website. They gave me a much better feel for game dynamics and how to use them to my advantage.

Second, I've done lots of reading on this site. The information I've picked up here has improved my play greatly.

Same as senecasax. Didn't have to worry about culture or resources. Plus I could take a fleet of planes and boats and wipe out a civ.

Me too.
I beat Civ II on Deity, but haven't got past Regent on Civ III.
But I haven't played as much, so maybe I just need practice.

It's definitely harder to exploit CivIII. No building 50 spies and sending them to take down the enemy capital the turn beofore they land their spaceship. Oh, those were the days!

I personally never played Civ II. I remember hearing about Civ II when I was still in fourth grade from a girl who had the gold edition. A bunch of my PC friends had it, and it did sound interesting. At $10, though, does anyone think its worth buying(does it have something that Civ III left out, etc.)? I'm pretty happy with Civ III, but I'm always hearing people, mainly in the other forums, complaining about how "Civ III isn't an improvement over Civ II" and those kinds of things. I honestly don't know where I'd be right now if I hadn't seen Civ III in a CompUSA ad, and remembering the good reviews I heard from friends about the Civ series.
I know I'm beginning to drift off into reflection, but what else am I supposed to do for my 100th post? ;)

Yes.

Because I found MacGOTM here in CFC.

I have played Civ, CivII and CivIII. But, in former two, I did not even think about improving my strategic techniques, partly because of cheat mode and "restart from last save" option.
On encountering MacGOTM here (thanks, Bubbabuddha), I really wanted to compare my result and skill to the other's. Then, I have learned a lot of things here and from attendants of MacGOTM.

Thanks everybody!!
Thanks again, Bubbabuddha!

Its worth it for $10 as long as its the gold edition. The graphics might be an eye sore, no animations. But hey, its got wonder movies:cool: . The most interesting thing is the senarios. Many to choose from and even with old graphics still put you right in the battle - civil war, wwI, wwII, aliens, etc. It will seem odd though without culture.

Definitely pick it up. I like the Napoleon scenario the best, so many different approaches - very cool.

Yes, Napoleon is so much fun! I love playing the turks and the prussians. However, its really annoying that my civ always uses the Mesopotamian city style.

My favorites are WWII with the Germans and their blimps and the aliens with the spooky sounds and hovering workers.

I think that I am better at playing Civ 3 because I would use the cheat menu in Civ 2 to the point where the game really wouldn't be all that much fun any more. It got to the point where I would use it as a crutch.

Now that I play Civ 3, I can't cheat. Hell, I can't even get the @#$%@# scenario editor to work, so I can't backdoor cheat either. Everytime I load it, I click some button to do something and I get all sorts of "error - line xyz yadda yadda yadda." Really quite annoying.

Whoa, I sure got a lot of responses on my little query :goodjob:. The $10 bucks one I'm talking about is the link thats on the main civfanatics page (I'm assuming takes me to Amazon.com) I'll check it out, and if I can convince my big bro to buy it from the internet, I'll probably get it for the summer so I'll have something to take during my breaks of Civ III. Or maybe it'll be the other way around, Civ III as a break from civ II. Hmmm... :hmm:

I've definitely gotten better with each new version of Civ. I think it stems from the fact that each version has gotten more and more complex and richer in its environment. It forces you to understand the game nuances in order to play the game at all. Plus it's addictive. Most games come and go pretty quickly on my gaming radar, but I always come back to playing Civ after I tire of other games. This game is just so different each time you play it that I never get tired of playing.
