Straight to the game !! :D And after I come back to the manual and if I don't understand I play tutorial ...

what kind of a civ fanatic need the tutorial after playing every series.

I say stright to the game, but i will make sure to sudy the Civilopeadia as if its my next exam :)

Manual comes first, that's what I always do with every game I buy. Then, straight to the game (Chieftain, Greeks), and paying good attention to the Civilopedia.

I'll play the tutorial after my first game, just out of curiosity.

My list:

  1. Buy game
  2. Open box, and glance through manual on the way home
  3. Install game
  4. Play a game using civ3 strategy
  5. Lose, and lose badly
  6. Curse the AI
  7. login to Civfanatics to join other fanaticians wining about how Firaxis ruined the great game in history
  8. Play again

I'll most likely just skim over the manuel when I get the game. Then I'll at least check out the game. Next, I'll play through a quick version. Once I get a basic feel for the game and all of the new features, I'll then delve into the editors (at least the level 1 and level 2). Finally, I'll dive into an epic game.

I will read the manual while on the way home from best buy and try not to crash my car. Tutorials are for uptight, type A losers. Screw the tutorial, just play the first game on chieftain.

Read the manual in the way home, keep reading it while installing, play a game in chieftan, reed the whole civlopedia. Realize that it´s going to be 3 am after that. Sleep 4 hours, wake up a keep playing until a got bored or I start cursing the AI for been to much smart/stupid.

usually tutorial -> game (epic, of course!!!)
but maybe we'll do fine in civ4 due to experience with 1, 2 & 3.
then again... have you ever noticed that the coolest moments are installing and learning the game? of course the game can be fun, but the beginning.. the mystery is so intense.. :)

the manual rocks when you need to take that poop.. and during meals to build up excitement that gets you back on the pc!

I'll read the manual while in the car / installing the game, then go through the tutorial. I want to get a good idea of whats changed before I jump into a game.

Throw out the manual... (Cause I'll lose it anyhow)
Delete the tutorial... (No good reason)
Play the game once or twice...
Jump to the online MP for the rest of my life...

Yeah, it would be easy to go and jump right into playin the game, but I look at playing a new game like eating a sundae. To really enjoy it, you have to take it little by little. if you just dive in, the enjoyment will be over before you know it and you will be left with an empty bowl, scraping off what little remains with your spoon.

To further explain, having tasted the Civilization flavor before, I know that I'm going to like it. First I'm going to sample a little bit by reading (or at least skimming through the manuel). Next, playing the tutorial would be skimming around the edges of the bowl, gathering any overlaps that may be ready to fall off to the table or floor. Playing through a quick game (savoring each bite one at a time) is pretty much where I start digging through the whipped cream, fudge, jimmies, and or any other toppings that might be their. Finally, I start on the ice cream (in this case, it will be the epic game), where I will again savor each bite one at a time. By then, I should have my fill, until my appetite comes back to me and I'm ready for a second dish.

Get me a coffee, study the manual for an hour or two, then play the tutorial to get used to the interface, then play a fast game on Warlord, then get back to the manual, read it from cover to cover, complain about the mistakes in the manual -many last minute changes that didn´t make it into print, as usual  -, then start a game on Monarch and play in earnest.

Btw, there were only very few PC games in history with good manuals -Civ1, Moo1 and especially Age of Emperors come to mind. I don´t think AoE series is really that great, but has the best manuals hands down.
