Are you more likely to settle on a resource in wide games?

Usually I'd never settle on a resource because of the various improvements boosts you can unlock, but in my last game there was gold, gems and silver on hills everywhere and on a whim I settled a couple of cities in those spots.

Straight out of the box you get cities that can build in a timely fashion and contribute considerably to your economy. Now I know I'm sacrificing a few good tiles later on for a boost right now, but I've been finding that that early boost into a decent position can snowball as you get the infrastructure of your empire built earlier on.

Yes, no?

I suppose if you're playing wide settling on a resource may not be such a bad idea, provided there are other resources on the surrounding tiles or you very much need an early boost (happiness, gpt, etc.)

Normally, I'd never do it, simply because I love the extra benefits I can receive later on (like you said), but it can't hurt to try it once or twice.

Going wide, imo it's a good idea to settle on lux resources. A lot of resources only provide +gold so, if the position of the resource allows you to settle on it, it's actually a pretty good idea. Having said that, I usually try to avoid settling on stratigics

Settling on a lux is probably worth it in every case you are not forsaking another lux to do it. Even then I would think twice before not settling on the lux.

Settle on it. If you've got enough happiness you can sell it right away. If you don't have enough happiness you don't go unhappy from the new city. Nothing but upside. One rich tile a hundred and fifty turns later isn't worth forgoing the immediate benefits (if it's a plantation tile you're missing out on plus one gold for building a plantation, and plus one food for fertilizer, hardly game breaking.)

Absolutely settle all the luxes you can. Especially marsh sugar, it would be forever to work that normally and this way you can sell it on as soon as calendar opens. Plantation lux and camps are prime targets as you are not likely to work those tiles anyway, not for a long time.

I like settling mining lux personally as I like the extra production from settling on hill and can usually benefit from extra defense and I won't work all mines for a while anyway. So win win the way I play.

I'm not really a fan of settling on Trapping/Calendar resources because they're generally not on hills. But if I see a gold/silver/gems in a good spot, I'll definitely settle on top of it.

i settle on unique luxes for the happiness nullification of that city. i dont really settle cities after t80 unless im going wide or need a strategic (the only reason to settle on strategics, imo, instant access to iron/coal/aluminum). pre-t100 happiness is usually borderline all the time so its kind of crucial, imo.
