Started a new game on Civ3, tiny map and 3 random civs on Warlord. I thought I'd try a 'peaceful' game. I was doing well in tech by buying and trading techs, everyone was polite/gracious to me and I thought things were just peachy. The Americans and Chinese went to war for a while, but I just let them go at it. They then declared peace, and then the "gracious" Chinese showed up on my doorstep with a fistful of swordsman !!!! WTH !!!!!!!! They pillaged two towns, took workers..... man I was pi$$ed !

I produced swordsman ASAP, and managed to only just crush this invasion, refusing peace until I'd reconqured my land :)

Anyway, is it normal for a 'Gracious' civ to attack for no reason? I'm now tempted to ditch this peaceful game and just go after the Americans (they're the weakest and closest).

hopefully AI intelligence is tweaked in civ 4 like it has been talked about for months since the announcment of civ 4

Yeah, this is one aspect of the game that really pisses me off. What's worse is when your best friend jumps on the bandwagon to get friendly with a superpower and signs a MA against you.

Sure it's annoying, but have you never done it yourself? It's good to have a best friend, but it's even better to have their land I reckon.

I wish that I could say that this scenario never occurs in Real Life but we all know better. The scenarios that are most readily brought to mind are from recent history: Hitler was busy plotting the ruin of the Soviet Union while "gracious" towards them(then invaded them).
France & England all but abandoned their ally Czechoslovakia when Hitler demanded the "return of the Sudentenland".
The problem that arises is the AI(typically) performs a half-assed invasion or ROP rape. On those occasions, obviously there will be exceptions but generally, the AI will be gracious and send a pathetic SOD or single spearman invader, thus losing the element of surprise.

Welcome to CFC :)

If you have a strong military, the other civs think twice before attacking you ;)

Being peaceful and trade luxuries with everybody while having a weak military, it's not guarantees you that no one will attack you.

Hit the F3 and see what your military advisor tells you; how your army is compared to the army of the other civs(weak, strong, etc...).

You can have a peaceful game if you wish, but do not leave weak your military.

I've seen an AI once go from Gracious, to furious, declared war on me (it lost about 25 swords), then went gractious against, and asked for an alliance against the top civ on the island. crazy game (my first emperor game, too -- a GOTM game with France and China on the island).

The Chinese decided to attack AGAIN. So once again I ammassed forces and squished them, but this time I advanced a little into their territory to show them what for.

I'm keeping a more up to date formidable army now, and everyone appears to be holding from attacking! We'll see how that goes

Aye. While having a gracious "ally" is nice, it really (IME anyway) comes down to your standing military. If you're weak, no matter how friendly the AI is, they can/will attack (as you've seen) w/o provocation.

Doesn't the AI only change its diplomatic stance really quickly only on higher difficulty levels? because on all the lower level games i've played they really take a while to declare war or you have to do something really bad.

What's an RNG roll?

A RNG role is a random number generator "role of the virtual dice." A lot of decisions and things are partially decided by RNG "rolls" in Civ 3.

I don;t mind if I occasionally get "caught off guard" just wish the AI would do a better job.. I usually am more than capable of fending off an invasion because the AI tactics are.. well.. lacking when it comes to invasions.. Although the first time I went to war in CIV III, I was really caught off guard (which hooked me into the game) I took a standard five caravels filled with Knights and a couple of catapults against the Egyptians, who amassed an island nation of about 25 cities (my first game ever ion CIV III mind you) I was shocked to see every tile had been improved, but figured what the heck.. attacked the first city, was surprised by the number of units in that city, but took it.. and then what came after me.. well.. it was obvious Civ II tactics were no longer applicable and I have kept a strong standing military ever since.. I hope with CIV IV, war is stepped up another notch..

In a game today I was pleasently surprised by a polite AI neighbour declaring war on me, despite the fact that my military was quite surperior to his. Of course, his attack was ineffective, and I am currently crushing the AI to bits, but still, it is nice for the AI to do unexpected things.

Oh, I see now so everything's basically random.

But it still seems like they're more likely to declare war on you on higher difficulty levels.
