Mercenary armies are an important chapter in the history of civilization. Rome used German troops. The Byzantines used Vikings. The British used Hessians. Everyone used Swiss pikemen.

In modern times, the Soviets and the U.S. provided equipment, training and occassional direct military support. Sometimes these weapons have been turned against the giver.
