Atheism is something unique.

Atheism is damn well not unique in any sense of the term. There have been Indic atheists and sceptics since before the BC years, all within the "Hindu" framework. This is a childish claim, that of the OP.

You look like that guy in "Goodness Gracious Me", I can just imagine:

"Atheists? Indian!"

An Indian atheist is still an atheist.

Ehm... By that definition, Christianity isn't a religion either, because there are different beliefs, practices and rituals from denomination to denomination and, even, Christian to Christian.
But, if that point was to be conceded, it would merely turn Hinduism from a religion to a group of religions.

Btw., my religion classes also taught me about Hinduism, so don't go making high claims of ignorance, lest I ask you what the three basic scriptures of Norse mythology are.

Aneeshm has a point here, actually. Sure, there is diversity in Christianity, but take away the belief in Christ's divinity and resurrection, and whatever is left is not Christianity. This is a core belief, necessary for all Christians. There are other core beliefs. Islam and Judaism are the same way.

Hinduism is indeed quite different. You can have two "good Hindus" that do not agree on a single theological point. This is because "Hinduism" is an outside label applied to hundreds of distinct practices. Aneeshm is right in saying that Hinduism is not a religion. It would be more correct to say that Hinduism is actually a group of hundreds of religions, some of which are only very tenuously related to each other.
