Edit: seems my screenshot didnt show up  Okay, basic computer skills elude me at the moment, not even getting an option to attach pic when I edit or reply to a post...only when I make a new one.

Okay, was fighting the Persians and backed them into a corner :goodjob: But.....I seemed to make it impossible for me to totally finish them off. Im playing as England, but dont have Man o' Wars, no saltpeter in my lands and no one can trade any. Any suggestions welcome.

Description of problem then: Started on islands, little islands, with more water tiles than land tiles. Persia was being a pain and kept declaring war so I started taking his cities, only the 2nd time I wagged an offensive war and it worked. He is down to his last city which is north of me, 3 water tiles away. Problem is, there was only 1 land tile there and he settled it, so there is no way to land a force. Am I basically screwed in terms of Persia? Or should I attack the Iroquois who have a city next to mine that has saltpeter, so I can make Man o' Wars?

You can't invade until Marines. You can still make Man o' Wars and take potshots, though.

DaveMcW, that won't work, since right now that is persia's last city, which means that city is it's capital. You can't demand their capital when discussing peace terms.

For now, I guess you could maybe invade the Iroquois for the salpeter, but I'd only do that if you have a substantial amount of techs left to research to advance to the industrial age. If you will soon or already are in the industrial age, research Steam Power, you'll be able to build Ironclads (4/4/4 ADM, require coal & iron, 80 shields), which are better than any sail ship. If you can get those ironclads, maybe surround his island with them, so he can't trade with other civs, and unless you've still got a grudge against this guy, I suggest you just make peace, and keep the ironclads in place so he can't send ships out with settlers. This will probably require more ships, since you'll have to respect his borders. If you wanna wipe this guy off the face of the world, get comfy and still surround his city until you get marines. :tank:

Right now we are almost thru the Middle Ages, researching Physics now. I want to destroy Persia as he is still demanding "tribute" because he is more powerful than me /sigh. Since I culture flipped the Iroquois city next to the one with saltpeter I may be able to culture flip again. May send in troops from my main city, so I can concentrate on culture building there.

The pop in his main city is only 4, since there is no bonus fish tiles and he is building very very slow and no land left to settle anywhere so he cant expand with settlers.

Now to deal with America who ones 35% of the map.

Wait, is persia down to one city or not? You're saying he's more powerful than you; explain (i.e. does he have more units than you? more gold? or do you mean he has a better score?). How many cities do you have, and how is their production. I'm a little confused right now, but I'm sure there's a way that I or someone else can help you with your problem.

Clarify:

Persia is down to one city, a single land tile island. He has a pop of 9, about 20 gold, if i remember correctly, no clue on army size. He is trying to be the big bully on the block still by demanding tribute from me, saying he is more powerful. Think the AI Persia is having delusions of glandeur.

If Persia is a long time enemy of yours and you are NOT in democracy, I'd suggest staying at war and blockading him (like elpadrino87 said). My people always like it when I'm at war with a civ. that has been giving me problems for a long time (but only if I'm not in a democracy), so it may be beneficial to stay at war until

A) He is willing to make peace with you (and give you some goodies for it)
OR
B) Sit tight until you can crush Xerxes beneath the feet of your marines.
